High in the Blue Ridge Mountain range of northeastern Georgia, visit Mountain City, a reminder of a more peaceful, self-reliant time. The town sits on the Continental Divide at the head of the Little Tennessee River. A benefit of its higher altitude is cooler weather relative to central and southern areas of Georgia. Plan a family vacation in this region, where all members will find plenty of things to do.
The principal attractions of the region are outdoors. Enjoy Black Rock Mountain State Park just outside town. Breathe in fresh mountain air and appreciate panoramic views stretching about 80 miles (130 kilometers). Some areas in the 1,743-acre (705-hectare) park reach 3,640 feet (1,110 meters) above sea level.
Dip your toes or participate in a water activity at the park’s lake, which covers 17 acres (7 hectares) and is fed by clean, crisp mountain streams. Purchase a fishing license and try your skills at catching trout and bass.
Hike on four trails in the park through lush vegetation and under high trees that open onto expansive views. Waterfalls and streams are common features and make excellent areas to stop for a snack or meal. Cottages, campsites and tent areas are scattered throughout the park.
Foxfire Museum & Heritage Center, located here, provides historical accounts of 19th-century Appalachian life. It also marks where the Foxfire life skills following began and is still observed in the U.S. and elsewhere. The Foxfire publications, which have become so popular since the 1960s, are still being printed, with new information. Tour over 20 traditional buildings including a grist mill and log chapel at the site. The gift shop is often busy, with people browsing the full selection of books and magazines, as well as handmade crafts and items.
