Perth Travel Guide Video

Unwind in Australia’s most remote state capital, set in a lush valley along a picturesque river and surrounded by great beaches, historic harbors and vast deserts.

Enjoy the warm weather, beaches, wineries and breweries, and historic sites and museums of the capital of Western Australian (WA). Perth sits on the banks of the Swan River and its western suburbs stretch out to the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Each afternoon the “Freo Doctor,” a refreshing wind, blows in from the south. Perth’s 1.8 million locals are known to be down-to-earth and fun-loving.Have a barbecue or see the Botanic Garden in elevated Kings Park. The Swan Bells Bell Tower below the park also offers great Swan River views. Take the kids to the Perth Zoo or Scitech, or show them the world’s most valuable coin at the Perth Mint. Discover where they found the gold to make the coin at the Western Australian Museum, which focuses on WA’s mining history, among other topics. After exploring the city center on foot, take the train or bus to leafy suburbs such as Subiaco and Cottlesloe. Swim and surf at Cottesloe Beach and follow the coast to Hillarys Boat Harbour for family entertainment. While there, see marine creatures swim right past you at the Aquarium of Western Australia.Just north from the city's central train station is the Perth Cultural Centre, where you can admire the nature-inspired Aboriginal paintings at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, followed by a night out in Northbridge.

Renting a car is a great idea if you plan to explore the wineries and fruit farms, old mining towns and wildlife parks surrounding Perth. Make the scenic ferry trip to Fremantle to enjoy historic attractions, Australian beer, Italian coffee and crafts markets. Visit some of WA’s most famous jails: the Round House and Fremantle Prison. After exploring the Western Australian Maritime Museum, catch the ferry to idyllic Rottnest Island to see quokkas and seals.Sunny Perth is a relaxing city with easygoing locals, great beaches and a broad range of cultural attractions. It is certainly worth the long journey westward from Australia’s east coast!

Getting around Perth

Most Perth residents get around by car, and if you can rent a car of your own too, this will give you some extra flexibility. There are good public transportation options too, though. Most corners of the city are covered by either bus, train or ferry. Buy a Smartrider card to pay for all your travel. The card can be topped up again and again, and offers a 10 percent discount on every journey you take. Best time to visit

Perth’s hottest months are November through March. To avoid the peak temperatures, visit during Perth’s springtime, which runs from September to November. Pack for beautiful, sunny days and evenings cool enough to demand a light jacket. This is also a wonderful time of year visually, as Perth’s colorful array of wildflowers will be in full bloom.
