Domes Beach (Playa Domes) is a legendary surf spot celebrated among boarders around the world for its big, clean waves. Experience the leisurely atmosphere of Rincón’s surfer crowd while relaxing on the beach’s golden sands and appreciating its picturesque Caribbean landscape. The beach became famous after hosting the World Surfing Championship in 1968\. It takes its name from the blue dome of a decommissioned nuclear power plant set above its northern tip. With a curving sweep of soft sand backed by swaying palms and lapping waves of the Caribbean Sea, the beach is a symbol of nature’s beauty. You won’t find any amenities or buildings, just beachgoers and surfers with their boards, towels and picnic baskets. Strong currents are common so be careful when swimming here. At the northern end of the bay, follow a short trail to a secluded beach called Spanish Wall Beach. During the winter and into early spring, almost every grain of sand is occupied, with surfers coming from all parts of the world. Marvel as experienced riders perform tricks in the waves. Get equipment and try surfing yourself or sign up for lessons with a knowledgeable instructor. Rent boards and arrange classes at nearby Maria’s Beach and in Rincón. Above a small bluff at the southern end of the bay is Punta Higuero Light House, first erected in 1892 and rebuilt in 1922\. Surrounding the lighthouse is El Faro Park, a great vantage point for watching the surfers and looking out to Desecheo Island. It’s also a superb location for spotting humpback whales, which arrive from January to March. Walk 5 minutes on the main road to see the former nuclear plant. Domes Beach is just 10 minutes by car from downtown Rincón. Public transportation is limited so the easiest way to get here is by rented car. Use the free parking available at the lighthouse and close to the power plant. The winter months are the beach’s busiest period. (700 reviews) Very basic room. While it was sufficient for a single night prior to our cruise, it is definitely not something suitable for a longer stay. A lot of noise from the street (stayed on a Saturday) as well as thin walls/hearing conversations from the room next door. My suggestion for the management is this: A few acoustic panels placed around the room to dampen sound, a mini fridge, hair dryer and a couple of bottles of water would really help take this from a basic room tolerable for a single night stay to something much more welcoming. Also, have sheet already on the bed instead of the guest out it on takes minimal effort but looks nicer than having it sitting on top of the bed. Stairwells, hallways, and our room were all clean and well maintained. The two restaurants were clean and thenfiid was good. All of the staff were gracious and friendly. The water pressure in our shower was phenomenal! An on-site laundry room and pool were great to have. The location is great: a 10-minute drive from the airport and 5-minute walk to Isla Verde beach, and close to a variety of restaurants and shops. As a bonus, bus lines to Old SanJuan and Piñones are right there, if that's your thing. The only area of improvement would be the slow, glitchy wifi. THIS HOTEL IS A GREAT VALUE AND I WOULD JUMP AT THE CHANCE TO RETURN.
