Travel Guide
After exploring dive sites and wildlife reserves, save some energy for partying as this sleepy fishing village’s nightlife draws revelers from all over the southwest coast.

Boquerón is a laid-back village within Cabo Rojo that hugs the coast of the Bahía de Boquerón. A gorgeous crescent-shaped coastline shelters one of Puerto Rico’s best beaches, a pretty marina and a ribbon of fantastic dive sites. Indulge at the village’s lavish balneario, or resort, and enjoy easy access to the beachfront. Check out the wildlife refuges and you might spot native birds amid the tree canopy.

Get acquainted with the cozy village by strolling along its main street and waterfront boulevard, Poblado de Boquerón. Step into rustic restaurants in wooden shacks or savor the aroma of freshly cooked street food from stalls shaded by brightly colored sun umbrellas. Visit in the evening to find atmospheric bars and clubs. On the northern end, you’ll find the Boquerón Yacht Club and its collection of luxury boats. The southern border of the boulevard will bring you to the marina and its connecting resorts.

Boquerón’s coastline has earned the village a reputation for aquatic adventures. Visit the Blue Flag-awarded Boquerón Beach and laze on golden sands under the shade of palm and almond trees. Swim in the sheltered waters and look out across the hypnotic blue of the Bahía de Boquerón. Try stand-up paddleboarding or rent a Jet Ski. Jump onboard a boat bound for Boquerón’s dive sites and discover the vivid underwater world offshore.

Enter the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge to go bird-watching and you might spot the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird, as well as migratory birds on a stopover as they journey between North and South America. There is a visitor center located at the refuge’s historic Salt Flats. Also take your binoculars with you to the Boquerón Forest Reserve to spot rare birds within its mangrove-lined wetlands.

Boquerón is 5.5 miles (9 kilometers) south of the city of Cabo Rojo. Fly into San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport and rent a car, get a taxi or use the airport transfer service to reach Boquerón. The village is between 2 and 3 hours’ drive from the airport. For beachside fun and wildlife watching, Boquerón is an ideal destination in Puerto Rico.
