Unexpectedly excellent

Posted Apr 10, 2014 on Hotels.com
I booked at the last minute, and am amazed in retrospect there were still rooms available. The location by the harbour suited us excellently as we used the navette to get to the part of Toulon we wanted to visit (the Stade Felix Mayol). The staff are excellent, the clients friendly. The romm facilities are basic but spotless. One gripe I have about most hotels these days - there was no shampoo available there; for a visit arriving from a flight, this can be problematic. All hotels should look at this issue. No question, if I'm going again to Toulon, I'll be staying here!

never pay before seeing

We should have been suspiscious when the hotel asked for full payment upfront before giving us our rooms. The rooms are tiny, the beds even smaller. When you shower you have to place towels on the floor to stop the water going under your bed. Some days they didn't even make up the rooms. The surrounding neighbourhood is a dive and definitely not a safe place at night. Absolutely negative negative negative. The only good thing was the exit door!

Cheap and cheerful

Second time we've stayed. Nothing really wrong with the place and we'd stay again, but it's let down by the details: nowhere to put your shower gel when showering, the showers seem to be designed to flood the bathroom, the beds lack headboards so it's uncomfortable to sit up in bed (although the beds themselves are fine), and the location means it can be noisy if the window is open. But basically you're staying in rooms above a bistro with prices to match, so it's hard to grumble too much. The staff have always been quick to sort out any niggles we've had and if you get the right room, the views are fantastic. There's no parking, but we've always managed to find space in the area just off the Rue Louis Curet, so don't let that put you off.
