The hotel is all Smoke and Mirrors

Posted Nov 13, 2014
Pros: The personnel were very nice and the pool was heated. The food was also pretty good and the River Rock Restaurant was great!
Cons: The walls need insulation. The doors shouldn't slam shut loudly jarring your senses and the plumbing needs replacing.
Location: It's located on Ventura blvd so there's lots of good restaurants and spas and movies.
Sportsmens Lodge is newly remodeled and looks great, but it can't fix the paper thin walls, leaky tubs going drip, drip, drip throughout the night, and doors slamming. You just fall asleep in the comfortable beds and you can hear every detail of your neighbors argument that goes on interminably and only stops when the manager goes to the room twice. You switch rooms only to be woken by a teenager kicking on the door, hoping her family will wake up at 2 am to let her in. Her family doesn't respond but all adjacent neighbors do. Then you switch rooms again only to be woken up at 4 in the morning by neighbors arguing next door. Because I reserved through Expedia, the manager couldn't give me any refund on my hotel stay. Is there no recourse? Expedia, please help me.

Ok hotel, bit pricey.

Posted Oct 22, 2014
Pros: Pool/Spa. Fire pit area. Free Wifi.
Cons: Put ice machines on each floor. Bathrooms need fan & towel bars. Room needs dresser, closet too small. Pool/spa should be open past 9pm. Free parking.
Location: Lots of restaurants on Ventura street (close by 9PM unfortunately). Grocery store across hotel.
Our family (2 adults & 5yr child) stayed for 4 nights, with plans to visit Universal Studios, Santa Monica pier, Sunset & Hollywood strips (all within 10-20 minutes). Hotel was ok, a bit overpriced, especially parking fee; $14/day. They weren't disclosing fees to people checking in (including us). The hotel has been renovated, but still a cement building with no noise proofing. You can hear everything from room: people walking in hall, doors slamming, even neighbors having regular phone conversations. The beds were super comfortable, but noises kept waking us up. Our first night some kids were partying in a car in back parking lot with loud music for over hour. Finally had to call front desk at 3:45 AM, they left shortly after. Other mornings we were awaken by vacuuming before 8AM. Room is spacious, but no storage. Room has no dressers and tiny closet 1-ft wide with curtain that blocks it, so it's 1/2 inaccessible. Bathroom has no fan and no towel bars. We couldn't hang a hand towel when washing hands. Spa/Pool closes at 9PM, seems a bit early for a tourist spot. Didn't try the food at the café, but did have a really bad and overpriced strawberry shake.

Older hotel trying to be hip

Posted Oct 21, 2014
Pros: The pool and the balconies, central location is a plus.
Cons: Security, bedding and soundproofing all need to be improved.
Location: Good location close to Universal Studios, highway access and just 15 minutes from Beverly Hills and great restaurants abound in the area.
We had stayed at Sportsmen before and it was adequate if old and drab. The hotel has updated their décor and tried to move the hotel into a more modern look. The look is better and the pool area is great however there are still some serious issues. Elevators are slow, old and small you can barely fit 2 people and 2 carry ons into the elevator. The bed is overly firm and pillows are some of the worst I have encountered at a hotel. The walls are paper thin and you can easily hear toilets flushing and people urinating through the walls. You can also hear people walking and moving above you which disturbed my sleep. The balconies are nice and afford a great view of the pool. One more thing there is a 'security' door on the back of the hotel to the parking lot...it was broken when we were here 4 years ago, it is still broken. We won't be back.

Mid-Century Modern

Posted Oct 15, 2014
This hotel was completely remodeled in what appears to be mid-century modern style. The room we stayed in had the smallest closet I have ever seen. Roughly 18 inches wide. Otherwise the room was nicely done, beds comfortable. Very cheery Patio Room for breakfast.

Finest customer service ever!

Posted Sep 16, 2014
Pros: Everything!
Cons: Cannot think of anything
Location: It is conveniently located near many restaurants.
We spent three nights at the Sportsmen's lodge and could not have had a more pleasant experience. This was by far the most attentive, helpful and kind lodging team we've experienced after more than 30 years of traveling! They went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and to take care of every request in a very professional manner. Thank you! Loved the hotel's fresh and slick style as well as the comfortable and clean rooms.
