Beautiful hotel but thin walls.

Posted Jul 22, 2014
Pros: Cottages are beautiful, staff attentive, well stocked breakfast in lovely reception area.
Cons: Sound proof the rooms. Inform guests of the breakfast at registration. Although in written material we missed the first day.
Location: Town of Carmel is a hilly and substantial walk away. Town is full of wine tasting shops, pricey boutiques and gift shops/eateries and lots of dogs!
It's a lovely town and beautiful hotel but you can hear every sound from the other rooms in the cottage. Movements feel like it's they are in your room and conversations are easily overheard. Other guests coming in later than our bedtime woke us up just by opening the door and walking around their room, especially upstairs. Showers and toilet flushing sounded like they were in our bathroom. We are early risers and were whispering and trying to be quiet in our own room knowing we were probably waking up guests in the adjoining rooms.

Loved it.

I felt at home. I loved how close we were to the beach. It had the "carmel" feel written all over it

Carmel Birthday Trip for Kathy

Posted Jul 6, 2014
Pros: Location and the grounds.
Cons: It sometimes took a while for the water to get hot (sometimes 2 minutes).
Location: Good food and shopping that are the hallmarks of Carmel by the Sea.
The staff was courteous and very helpful. The grounds and room were quite pleasing. We loved our stay and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to have a relaxing getaway. The close proximity to the beach and the distance from the center of town (just about a 20 minute walk), meant it was quiet and peaceful. If you wanted activity, it was only a short drive or walk away. Thanks to all the staff for making this a memorable experience.

Nice accommodations a bit away from Ocean Street

Posted Jun 26, 2014
Pros: Quiet and relaxing.
Cons: A few more places to hang towels so they may be reused. Despite efforts to have staff leave used towels, they were replaced.
Location: Easy access for Carmel, Pebble Beach and Carmel Valley.
The Colonial Lodge provides a number of separate buildings with different accommodations. It is very near the beach in the neighborhood a bit away from Ocean Street. Quite nice if you want to walk on the beach or wander through the neighborhood. A bit of a walk back to Ocean Street and the shops and restaurants. The grounds provide several locations to sit and relax. While our room was quite small, it was more than adequate. It featured a gas fireplace, wifi and a shower only. A pretty good value for Carmel.

Disappointing

Posted Jun 20, 2014
Pros: Good hotel staff, good location, nice bed
Cons: Less bleach solution, seriously upgrade the continental breakfast, move ice maker, replace carpets, lower rates, DVD players needed
Location: The location was great. We were able to walk to the beach and shop and dine nearby.
My husband and I were very disappointed with our stay. We travel a few times a year and spend about the same or less on our hotel accommodations and the other hotels have been much better over all. Our room smelled strongly of bleach. The carpets were very worn and stained. The continental breakfasts were truly inedible and cheap. Our room was located near the lobby and while there was a nice view outside our door, there was an ice machine outside one of our windows and it was very loud and disturbing especially in the middle of the night. Our room advertised a DVD player which it did not have. We requested one from the desk and when it was brought to us it did not work. After shopping, a beach hike and a nice dinner we wanted to watch and movie we rented and ended up watching it on our lap top. We would not recommend this hotel to anyone else and will not stay there again.

Squeaky

Room above ours has squeaky floor boards and prevented us from enjoying our room. Wouldn't go back because of this.

Close to the beach, near downtown. Nice grounds.

Posted Jun 6, 2014
Pros: Grounds, prompt checkout walkthrough of the room for forgotten items. They allowed us to check in an hour early
Cons: The fireplace heat to be adjustable. Better breakfast - especially given the culinary greatness offered in the area.
Location: Good beach access, fascinating homes to walk past, really great restaurants, close drive to Point Lobos park
We opted for the room with a fireplace and stayed two nights. Overall our stay was ok, but there were some disappointments. On checkin they were friendly and we were given two tasty cookies. The grounds are pleasant and we could see the ocean from our room. The room itself was smallish but acceptable given the age of the buildings. The fireplace was gas powered and we only used it for half an hour because of how much heat it produced even though it was foggy out. Because of the positioning of the furniture and fireplace it wasn't visible from the bed or chairs, only while you were standing. Other awkward aspects of the room were the bathroom facilities - the toilet and stall shower were in one small closet on the end of the room, and in another alcove also the size of a small closet on the side of the room was the sink, coffee maker, and mini fridge. This left no closet space, which they compensated for with an armoire that was not tall enough for me to properly hang the cotton maxi dress I had brought. Beach access was only a block away, and downtown was a mile. Walkable if you choose, occasionally we moved the car to within a few blocks of downtown just before the area where parking times are restricted and walked from there. The continental breakfast was disappointing. So-so coffee, bad pastries, cheap yogurt and some reasonably good granola and orange juice. On checkout I forgot my dress in the armoire. They called within an hour so we could pick it up.

Just ok.

Bathroom is in need of an update. Plus, caulk had mold grown under around shower. Bedroom was small and dated. Nicest area was reception. Breakfast was standard continental fare, nothing special.

Great hotel-nice perks & location, but inexpensive

Posted Jun 2, 2014
Pros: Location, location, location.
Cons: Room could have newer bedding, but not complaining. Everything was good as is. If you're not overally picky or dare I say upty, this place is perfect
Location: Only a block from the beach. Great during the day and a night all the families and friends lit a fire and cook out. Beautiful and clean.
Hotel is literally 1 block from the beach-Location can't be better. Cute place, clean room, quaint & quiet layout- Reminds me of a mini New England town. Staff was polite and very helpful when asking about local dining.
