Cold room

Posted Oct 12, 2014
Pros: price and convenience to Wheeling Island.
Cons: Put heat in rooms.
We checked in and room was cold. We called the front desk and they told us that we don't have heat in our rooms. He said to turn off fan and room should heat up. If it doesn't, they will send up extra blankets. Really!!! Good thing we brought our own blankets. It is an old hotel that has been updated but needs more updating. Don't expect a good breakfast. It's prepackaged muffins and coffee. Ok for price.

Very odd place

Posted Oct 8, 2014
Pros: Comfy beds, decent wifi, staff always polite
Cons: Rooms clean after check-in time, not giving check-ins access to occupied rooms, knowing your hotel's occupants, better breakfast, hotel maintenance
Location: Some of the most beautiful scenery on earth is to be found in this area.
On arrival at around 10:30pm, I was told that the room I had reserved was not clean yet, over 7 hours after check-in time. After a couple of moments they gave me a card for another room that was available, and gave me parking instructions. Upon entering the room, I noticed something was wrong. The room was already occupied. One of the occupants awoke and stared. I left the room quickly. Hotel staff appeared astonished that the room was occupied, and wondered aloud who might be in there. I was given a key for a third room, and this one was mostly clean and definitely unoccupied. The A/C was on full blast for some reason, an odd choice for autumn. I found the beds to be very hard, which is quite comfortable for me. The room was also a bit larger than a standard hotel room seems to be. The wifi signal was strong and worked well for everything except streaming video. Breakfast was another miss, as it was just coffee, orange juice, some sad-looking fruit, and prepackaged doughnuts as if from a vending machine. I didn't have time to try the restaurant. I'm not sure what other facilities they have, as there were no pamphlets or other brochures describing the hotel facilities in the room. I did notice a missing outlet cover in the room, with wiring basically exposed.

Charming by the river

Posted Sep 30, 2014
Pros: The central location for the activities we wanted to do.
Location: In downtown Wheeling it is very close to the Wheeling Island Casino, The Highlands, Moundsville in WV and the mall about 8 miles into Ohio.
Very nice older part of Wheeling history. Close to the park and Ohio river. If you are looking for night life this part of town is not where it is. The hotel staff was attentive and helpful. The restaurant within is good not a huge menu or open for breakfast. There is a pub with cold beer. Overall the stay was very good and we will come back.

Nice hotel very close to Uniglobe

Posted Sep 1, 2014
Pros: Great bed, parking garage, close to Uniglobe
Location: The Metro Diner is close.
We were to leave from the Uniglobe office at 6:00 a.m. So we made our 11/2 trek north the night before, parked our car, and got a great night's sleep. The next morning all we had to do was dress and go across the street.

Wifi never worked, printer did not work in business center. Lots of people smoke right at the main door. Gusts are shouting in the lobby (I beleive they were drunk).

At least they had a vacancy.

Pros: The view of the river.
Cons: Such a grand lobby area, such a shame that it has been let go. Definitely in need of a renovation.
Location: Nothing opens before 10am, even the coffee shops, had to drive a ways to find breakfast. The river walk area was nice.
We were looking for a place close to Moundsville, and this place was the only one that had any rooms, now I know why. Upon entering the Hotel, the smell is the first thing that greets you, overwhelming cleaning fumes trying to cover the underlying musty/mildew smell. The staff was adequate, although not overly helpful. Two tiny elevators to go up to the quest rooms, the elevators are dirty and creepy. When the doors opened and you step into the hallway, the stench of cigarette smoke is the first thing you notice, even though it is a non-smoking area, it smelled like years of smoke that they again tried to cover with chemicals. Once in the room, it was much better, although the beds had old, squeaky springs and paper thin pillows. The air conditioning worked well, and we did have a nice view of the river from our window.

Staff Nice, Room filthy

Posted Aug 11, 2014
Pros: Staff friendliness, provenance of the historic elements.
Cons: Cleaned, revamped - repaired, dripping sinks fixed, dings, cracks and scuffs repainted, etc. Staff could use proper uniforms
Expedia failed to contact us that the McClure was full after we had booked in advance. So we got there road-weary at 11:00 p.m. to check in, and were notified that they were full and that Expedia should have let us know. After the 2 staff members spent much time on the phone with Expedia and surrounding hotels in the area it was deemed that the entire area was full - no rooms. The staff then called a guest who had booked a block of rooms, but was still waiting for the arrival of a friend, who was going to be a day late, and he generously agreed to let us have the room for the night. The hotel is historic, but hasn't been kept up. We were relieved and grateful to the guest and the kind staff who helped us! Unfortunately the room was so very dirty--in the usual ways of mildew and hair in the bathroom-- but also in more obscure ways of a thick layer of visible dust on the entertainment center and a forgotten handful of nails (?) in the corner (telltale to how thorough the vacuuming was). Ultimately, our schedule allowed us little time there, arrived late, left early in the morning. Staff went the extra mile and were kind, room needed a serious cleaning.

This place is very scary looking from the outside. It does not look anything like the picture. It is very run down and in need of repair. There is a parking garage. The room was okay, it was clean. There was a working treadmill in the exercise room, that I appreciated. The rest was scary!

Good three star

Nice pub and restaurant. Many pizza and one Chinese restaurants a short walk away. Walls are thin. Good sized room with comfortable beds. Excellent wifi. The hotel committed one egregious mistake - housekeeping didn't show up on Sunday, but otherwise a nice stay.
