Absolutely gorgeous location!

Went in late October, early November so the hotel was not crowded. They upgraded us to full ocean front rooms, which was absolutely wonderful! Breakfast buffet was included in our room rate & very good. 2 kids ate free with paying adult. Dinner options at the hotel was a bit limited, but there were several restaurants within walking distance that we loved (such as the Kahuna Plantation and Keiko’s). The hotel has an awsome location, however it is a bit "run down" in comparison to some of the other hotels we’ve stayed at in Hawaii. The hallways are a bit "plain" and some of the rooms are clean, but just haven’t been renovated for some time. We stayed in the front building of the hotel, which has the beautiful grounds. (They also have a separate building across the street housing their partial ocean view/garden view rooms. This building is not nearly as nice! ) The spa is in a converted guest room, so not very fancy. Other than that, the staff is friendly, housekeeping is good, the gym is good, the pool is great (especially for tots), & the beach & location just can’t be beat. I’d be back!

We rented scuba gear / boogie boards nearby for a fraction of the cost at Boss Frog’s (in comparison to the hotel) We went grocery shopping in Koloa at Big Save to cut down some on the cost. The hotel offered several activities daily that were fun for adults & kids alike. We tried the hula dance, yoga & flower lei making. Our little ones also really enjoyed feeding the Koi fish. We went horseback riding on Poipu area which was spectacular. The views were amazing. My husband and 8 year old also went ziplining, which was a lasting memory. Great fun & worth the $!

Serene & perfect! Sheraton Kauai

We loved the ocean front room and the crashing surf on Poipu Beach...highly recommend the actual "ocean front" cost - as compared to other hotels in the same area, the Sheraton’s ocean front rooms are actually closer to the water. the morning Buffet is a grand experience- deliciious food in an unhurried atmosphere overlooking the beach. Waitress "Una May" is the sweetest lady- all the restaurant staff are genuine & with the spirit of ohana & aloha!

If you’re planning on hiking on the many trails- consider a less wet time of year- say anytime but Oct-Nov-Dec. Generally you’ll find sunny weather in the south & west parts of the island anyway, but even if you must drive in the tropical showers, do head up north to Princeville & Ke’e Beach to the Na Pali!

welcome to fantasy island!!

The hotel was very clean and service very friendly and good. Location is great. The only sour note was that the food at the restaurants was pretty poor in selections and preparation. I had to go off the property to other nearby restaurants for decent food.

do not eat at the hotel...first night was served bad tuna. The only meal worth eating at the sheration is breakfeast but is very expensive. The drinks are not well made either. I found Planation gardens had better food and cocktails, also the restaurants behind hotel in shopping village where better as well, in price and taste! Buy food and snacks at grocery store nearby in shopping village.

"Very central location to everything"

The hotel has a beautiful beach and great waves for the kids. It is centrally located to take in all of Kauai’s sites and excursions. I have to say that the restuarants in the hotel were expensive and lacking for dinner selections, but the pool bar/grill was great for lunch or an afternoon snack. We tried to make reservations for a Luau (not the one at the Sheraton) and the concierge refused to help us. We tried another time to have them make dinner reservations for us, and they literally acted like we were not standing in front of them. Oh well, we just called directly from the book of menus that they have out. Overall great time, we had a garden view, a little walk to the beach and you do have to cross a street, but not a problem for the savings.

Heavenly beds!!!

We stayed at the Sheraton Kauai for the second leg of our honeymoon, and loved it! It had a lot to live up to, because the first week of our honeymoon was spent in absolute paradise on the Big Island. We were disappointed at first because we had requested a king-sized bed, but were told that none were available; however, we were able to upgrade to a full ocean-view room at a discount since it was our honeymoon. The upgrade was well worth the money as the full ocen-view rooms are bigger and we were able to get the king-sized bed. Oh, that bed! Plush, down comforter, soft white sheets, fluffy white pillows. I never wanted to leave! But, you don’t go to Hawaii to stay in bed.... We ate at all of the hotel restaurants and the food was expensive, but delicious. The concierge did give us a pretty hard sell on going to a presentation at one of their other properties when we were only asking for a map. We also thought that the hallways could have been brighter, and wished that they would not have left so many phone messages for us because the phone blinked until you picked up the message and it was usually something silly. We really enjoyed the happy hours by the beach a couple times a week where mai tais were served and Hawaiian music was played while gorgeous Hawaiian girls hula danced. Overall, the rooms were clean, the staff was friendly, the beach was beautiful, and the sunsets were dreamy. We’re hoping to return someday!

Highly recommended: ****Treetop Zipline Tour****, Safari Helicopter Tour, Napali Coast Tour (consider Captain Andy’s raft tour), snorkeling from hotel beach, Smith Family Luau Not recommended: Hotel’s luau (emcee SOOO annoying), Holo-Holo Napali Coast Tour if Jeff Irons is crewman

Very Enjoyable Vacation

We stayed across the street from the main building with NO COMPLAINTS. We had a newly remodeled room that was clean and very comfortable. We paid extra for ocean view but next time would simply enjoy the gardens. If you are looking for a quieter pool there is one in the garden area that was always empty. All food was very good and worth the money except the Japanese Buffet (the food was simple and the sushi was limited and not cold...dangerous). We left the hotel to eat at The Beach House which had been highly recommended but it was at the bottom of our list of dining experiences. Overall the stay was wonderful and the staff extremely helpful.

Rent a car if you plan to leave the hotel. We spent $180 on a taxi roundtrip to a Chocolate Tour!

Great time on Kauai

There were stains on the carpeting in the room - need to replace. The air conditioning unit continually ran. Otherwise, it was a great stay - centrally located and the stafff were friendly and courteous. We love the beach!

We especially like Keoki’s Paradise & Kiahuna’s Plantation Gardens Restaurant

Nice Stay

We had a vacation package through Expedia for a garden suite room. The room was very nice, better furnished than most hotels, the only downside is that there was a large exhaust fan, I think from the laundry, nearby which we could hear through the open screen door at night. The upgrade to the ocean side rooms was $125+, which would have been nice but was outside our budget. The hotel’s grounds are well maintained, we enjoyed the Take Off’s playing surf music Sunday evening (they’re a regular event), and service was good.

Traveler's tip on dining

Avoid Brennake’s--just not very good, despite a prime location. On the way to Waima Canyon stop at Island Taco for the ahi fish taco--amazing. Keoki’s, near the Sheraton, has great ambiance.

Great spot, poor service

This hotel is clearly deferring maintenance. Cloudy pools with stained bottoms, leaky toilets, doors that don’t close automatically. And we encountered surly waitresses and even the concierge snapped at us when we didn’t say a Hawaiian name properly. We accepted an offer to skip housekeeping one day in exchange for a coupon for a buffet breakfast. When the bill for breakfast came for the second meal, it was not worth it.

Traveler's tip on dining

Have a tasty and scenic breakfast at the Kiahuna golf course restaurant.

Can’t wait to go back

The Sheraton Kauai Resort was the perfect hotel for our first trip to Kauai. We had upgraded to an ocean front room in the "Ocean" tower, and it was so worth it. We saw three rainbows over the Pacific right from our room-it was wonderful! We had our kids with us, and the room was a good size for the four of us. The beds were super comfortable, too. The kids really enjoyed the pool, slide and the ocean a stone’s throw away! We recommend the Poipu Beach Park (a 10 minute walk from the hotel)--great for safe swimming for the kids!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Wailea Canyon is a 45 minute drive from the hotel-a MUST SEE. POIPU Beach Park is great for the kids!

Great location but at a high price

The partial ocean view was not at all what we expected. We paid more for this luxury yet the small and very dark room was located across the street (we were under the assumption that the Sheraton was "ocean front") and with a very restricted view of the ocean. The costs at the resort were outrageous. The restaurant prices were way over priced for what you get. And forget about the drinks. The best part of the Sheraton, which I commend them greatly for, is the free internet and the Mai Tai hour. That was a real treat. Plus, the grounds were impeccable and the location and view can’t be beat. It’s just hard to enjoy when you can’t afford anything there at the restaurants.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Opt to not have your room cleaned to get a free breakfast buffet.

Amazing sunset views and top-level service

My fiancee and I stayed at the Sheraton in Kauai for 6 days for my friend’s wedding at the Grand Hyatt down the road. The guy at the front desk when we checked in was one of the most helpful, knowledgeable, and curtious people I’ve ever had to deal with at any hotel. He gave us what felt like the best room in the hotel, facing the ocean and the setting sun, and was able to negotiate the room upgrade rate lower! The hotel was very comfortable, as can be expected from a Sheraton, and the food and drinks were about average, but good. The breakfast place faces the sunrise, which was beautiful from the patio facing the beach. Overall, I was very impressed with this hotel, conveniently situated on a lovely private-access beach. I highly recommend it for a romantic and relaxing stay.

Traveler's tip on dining

Be sure to catch a sunset during dinner at The Beach House, a short drive from the Sheraton. Amazing drinks and even more fantastic food!

Great vacation spot

The most important thing (to me) is that there is a nice beach right in front of the hotel. This arrangement is so much more fun than driving to get to the beach. Think about it. All you have to do is put on some sun screen and start walking. Afterwards, you can get a drink (at the beach bar, of course!) or go straight to your room for a quick shower. So relaxed! The beach is suitable for swimming and skim boards. Surfing and boogie boards were OK, but the useful waves were pretty far out. The hotel is not new, but it is clean and well maintained. The landscaping is lush. The sound-proofing is weak, but that seems to be the norm for American hotels. The restaurants are pleasant, if a bit expensive. Parking is free and convenient. During my stay, there was an evening party four times a week. It featured a band, hula dancers, and free Mai Tais! Regarding location, there is one main driving route on this island that goes from the Napali coast on one end to Waimea Canyon on the other end. This hotel sits roughly in the middle of this route. My room location was not great. Since the hotel was not very full, I could have complained. I did not care enough about it, but you might. The only really irksome detail is the "resort fee." You can see it clearly stated on the Expedia web site. The fee cannot be avoided, so it really should have been folded into the price quoted by Expedia.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

There are farmers’ markets (called sunshine markets here) six days a week, in various locations. One of the locations is quite close to the hotel. This is how you get the best papayas.

AWESOME hotel

We had an amazing time at the Sheraton. Our room was beautiful. Everyone was incredibly nice. The free Mai Tais are fantastic after a day of exploring the island or snorkeling right on the hotel’s beach. Can’t wait to go back!!! Thank you, Sheraton Kauai!

Traveler's tip on dining

Pomodoro, in Kalaheo, is a fantastic little Italian restaurant that is off the beaten path. When you’ve had enough seafood, get your pasta fix at Pomodoro.

Relaxing

The ocean view room was great and definately worth the extra money. The garden room views are accross the street from the beach and beach front hotel rooms. The only downfall was there was no fan in the bathroom. By far, our favorite island, would definately recommend a zipline tour with hiking/kayaking.

Beautiful Location, So-so staff

We stayed at the Sheraton for our honeymoon and overall, had a great time. The hotel is gorgeous and is in a great location. Close to Kaloa town and other activities. We felt some of the staff in the restaurants on property were a bit short with us and not very friendly. But we just chose to eat other places and had a lot of fun! Hope this helps!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Everything seemed to be a very short drive, would definately recommend having a car there. You can get great deals on sushi and produce in the grocery stores, to save money. Many places will rent equipment so you don’t have to pay extra for a tour guide, just ask ahead.

Good Overall Value

My husband and I take a trip to Hawaii every year switching between Maui and Kauai. We normally stay at the Marriott in Kauai but this time the very good rate at the Sheraton enticed us into giving them a try and we were not disappointed. The Sheraton isn’t a luxury resort like Princeville or Hyatt Shipwreck but it is a very clean, comfortable and relaxining place to stay with a wonderful quiet pool in the gardens or fun beach pool. We would definitely stay there again.

awful conditions, depressing

i was truly shocked to find that the conditions of the hotel had probably not been altered since 1980. the lawn chairs, and entire setting was altogether deplorable and and shabby, especially for the amount i was paying. the breakfast was not included, where it used to be 3 years ago, HOWEVER, they still charge you a " resort fee" of $18.00 a day. for what? i don’t know. altogether, i hated this resort and as a result, did not enjoy my vacation.

Overall - Okay Stay

Nice location and overall an okay stay. Resort food was horrible and poor service. Japanese restaurant in hotel was dirty. Don’t waste time or money on trying the resort restaurants. We tried them all and were not impressed with any of them. Plenty of nearby places to dine for far superior meals. Not the place to stay if you enjoy staying within the resort for R&R. Activities Desk was very helpful in setting up outings.

Nice amenities, rooms were only o.k.

We stayed at the Sheraton Kauai in Poipu, which is located in a strip of resorts and condo complexes. The resort itself is very pretty, and literally right on the beach, so meals there were quite nice. Incidentally, I recommend the package that includes breakfast, as the island is small, with limited restaurant options. Save your going out for dinner. The resort amenities were nice, with friendly staff and a beautiful lobby and grounds. However, the rooms were sort of spartan, with a little bit of a motel feel. Definitely did not live up to the level of "affordable luxury" we thought we were getting. The room was clean, it was just cramped, dark and uninspiring.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

We paid extra for a partial ocean view, which was a joke. If you stood on the patio and craned your neck, you could see a little bit of ocean. Either don’t bother, or spring for the actual oceanside rooms.
