This bridge is really the anchor of the Duluth experience. Gorgeous at night, but just as interesting to view during the day. The bridge raises every 30 minutes on the 1/2 hour as needed for ships to pass--everything from sailing boats to 1100 ft barges. You will hear the boat signal to the bridge (horn?) blast: one long and two short. The bridge answers back the same. Very cool. You can walk across the bridge but cannot ride the bridge as it lifts--but that would really be fun, Duluth! I'd pay for that experience! Watching the lift bridge is not to be missed while visiting Duluth.

The Aerial Life Bridge is the anchor to the whole Duluth experience. The bridge lifts every 30 minutes on the 1/2 hours to allow ships to pass. Although you can't stand on the bridge when it lifts (that would really be fun, Duluth!) you can see it from nearly everywhere. Easy to walk over from Canal street to Park Point. All ships from small sailing boats to enormous 1100 ft. long barges go through the bridge entrance daily. Just breathtaking at night. The ships passing often signal the bridge operator with a signature whistle (horn?) blast: 1 long and 2 short. The bridge answers back. Lots of tradition and history. Very much worth experiencing.

Highly recommend The Anchor Bar & Grill (cash/check only) and Thirsty Pagan Brewing for places in Superior to eat and drink.
