Casa Abuelita: An exquisite, historic La Paz home.

Summary:
This is a traditional La Paz home! Over a hundred years old, this songbird-themed home lies in the heart of downtown, and just a short walk from the beach. It is cozily nestled in between some of La Paz’s trendiest shops, cafés and restaurants. Recently renovated and meticulously maintained, Casa Abuelita retains all the detail and charm of the original structure while bringing you 21st century amenities and all the vacation essentials.

The Space:
Casa Abuelita is the darling and favorite a of all the guests who have made this their home away from home. Its decoration and furniture is just exquisite. We’ve paid extensive time, love, and attention to the beautiful bird-themed murals and artwork of Casa Abuelita—a magnificent detail that brings light and beauty to its open spaces.

The colonial architecture of Casa Abuelita is a window into the past of this gorgeous city. Built over 100 years ago, it recently had an exquisite and complete renovation that has preserved the history and beauty of a vintage home while bringing you all the comforts and amenities of the 21st century.
Its interiors as well as its exteriors are beautiful and very comfortable. The original doors, cleaned and waxed, still hang beneath the wooden beams where they have been for decades, but they are now accompanied by a layer of foam insulation and waterproofing that allow for comfortable nights, even in the heat of summer.
Its two master bedrooms are warm and colorful. The side street rooms that once served spaces for Señora Julieta’s typing classes have been remodeled and are now finely designed bathrooms that also act as buffers from the sounds of the street.

Inside the house you will find unexpected peace and serenity, especially in the central courtyard, which has a pool, bbq grill, sun area, and features an old well, protected by a sturdy steel grate, that still reaches down into the La Paz aquifer.

Guest Access:
Guests have access to all areas of the house beyond the 3 bedrooms. Common areas include living room, kitchen and a full dining room, outdoor living room and pool in the courtyard, and laundry room with a washer and dryer. There are air conditioning units in every room of the house.

We take pride in using non-toxic cleaning supplies, providing a healthier and more natural alternative, while being just as effective to synthetic-based conventional cleaners.

We are making efforts towards water conservation in La Paz. We are adopting water-efficient technologies, growing mostly native vegetation in our decorative gardens, promoting responsible water usage, and building urban rainwater capture basins.

Finally, we provide canvas grocery bags you can use in your trips to the local stores, farmer’s and fish markets.

The Neighborhood:
Casa Abuelita lies in the heart of old La Paz, one block from the Malecón (the boardwalk that lines the cove), and one block from the Cathedral and the central plaza. La Paz’s finest restaurants are within a block or two of the house. Within strolling distance are two traditional Mercados where you can buy fresh fish, meats and vegetables.
The neighborhood restaurants include Ambrusia, JR Ribs, Tres Virgenes, Sorstis, la mentita, 1240 coffee shop, La Masa y MoMo fantastics pastries bakeries.

Casa Abuelita is the perfect place to explore Baja California Sur’s only true Mexican city, set like a pearl in the crown of the Bay of La Paz. Your days can be spent wandering the shops and markets, strolling the Malecón or heading to the islands for scuba diving, snorkeling, or playing with the sea lion cubs.

Getting Around:
From the airport: You can take a taxi or rent a car.*

To the boardwalk , restaurants, bars, downtown and main square where the cathedral and plaza are located, the farmer´s market, municipal market and supermarket: All are at walking distance to the outlying beaches: You can drive, or take a taxi, or a tour. Gorgeous, peaceful, and perfectly located
This is truly a beautiful property which is probably why it is booked out a year in advance for key months. If you go to La Paz, you should stay here. I stay in La Paz many times and always stay in nice places and this is my favorite!

Amazing! Great location, wonderful home!
4 friends and I came to La Paz and based off previous reviews we were pretty excited to check this place out. It did not disappoint. The house is thoughtfully decorated with birds throughout, whether mobiles or painted on the walls. The kitchen had everything we needed to make breakfast and coffee and drinks. The beds were very comfortable, every room had a fan. The pool is bigger than it looks in the photos as is the courtyard. The courtyard is so cozy, we spent our last night hanging out in the backyard there. We heated up the pool at night and it was a warm tub in the morning! Everything was wonderful. Check in and out was easy. And the location is absolutely perfect. Close to some great bars and restaurants, we went down the street two blocks for breakfast and dinner and across the street to the Coyota and Mezcaleria for drinks other nights. Simply perfect! We can't wait to come back.

Terrible experience
Booked a ten night stay here from the 14th -24th of November 2022. First issue two bars across the street stay open Friday through Saturday nights very late we found it impossible to sleep. On two different days we found cockroaches inside the kitchen and patio. The dryer door would not open, talked to Ana the onsite manager she did not fix the issue. The Wi Fi was very poor even if only one person was on a device, dropping all the time.We were only a couple trying to do some work. Gas run out to heat the pool water, All these issues were not fixed. I was told we would receive only a ten percent discount. The manager Ana and owner said the re-fund was sent to VRBO for them to re-fund me, this went on for weeks no re- fund this was even after me sending my bank statement to show nothing had been re-funded.

Wish we could have stayed longer
This is a lovely home, exquisitely furnished, in a great location that enables walking to most areas of interest. The street outside just completed a significant upgrade in March by the city so it is very attractive (and the construction work has ended). The block is a mixed use block with retail, homes and one bar. The kitchen had everything needed with a nice island and the knives were sharp. The back patio area was very inviting and relaxing with a heated pool. The living and dining areas were spacious and well arranged. The bedrooms and baths were furnished with high quality bedding and towels. The trade off for a central location is of course some typical inner city noise. Two of the bedrooms front on the street and one is located away from the street and is quieter. Those who like to go to bed early and who are not accustomed to or are sensitive to inner city noise may want to brings some ear plugs for sleeping. All in all a very enjoyable stay although it was cut short due to the border closing. Management was very helpful in addressing the issues associated with our early departure. Highly recommend this professionally run house whose management goes above and beyond expectations.

Great stay in best neighborhood
We had a fantastic time in La Paz and found that the house was perfectly located. You are literally surrounded by the best coffee shops, fresh organic juice bar, restaurants, Mezcal bar and the water all within a block. The house has everything you need and more to have an enjoyable stay and was perfectly clean. Designated parking spots were occupied by construction workers at the time of our stay but there was plenty of parking on the street so it was no inconvenience. There is a fantastic bar across the street which created atmospheric noise into the wee hours and some local animals but nothing you wouldn’t expect given the central urban location. Thanks for the stay, we would not hesitate to return!

Worked well for us
Our family of 3 adults/2 teens enjoyed our time at Casa Abuelita. The communication before arrival was spot on. The house was as described. The proximity to things we wanted to do was perfect. Fell in love with La Paz. Love that they appreciate and want to protect the environment. They even left us a baked Valentine's gift. We'll be back!

La Paz Adventure
This home is spectacular in every way. The pictures truly don't show how spacious the garden area is, the beauty of all of the special touches throughout the home, the luxuriousness of the three master bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms. There is even a bathroom off of the garden as well as a laundry room! Our only bother (not complaint) is there was major construction going on in front of the house with the entire street being closed to traffic while the power lines were being re-routed underground. We were able to park about a block away - no worries but the power was out for three hours the first night we were there (blown transformer!) and then turned off intentionally the next morning at 8:00 am. Sadly we were showering and packing for our trip home so it made things more challenging as when the power was off, so was the water! Thankfully we all have a healthy sense of humor - and truly, still give this home 5 big gold stars as it is truly beautiful and we will definitely return... Great location, beautiful home, fabulous time!

Beautiful House, Fantastic Location - just be ready for some street noise
Casa Abuelita is a real gem in the heart of La Paz. We have traveled all over Mexico and have rented many house; this is a favorite. Absolutely perfect location, within a ~2 block walk to everything - restaurants, cafes, bars, bakeries, shops, etc. The beautiful seafront Malecon (maybe our favorite in all of Mexico) is just 1 block away. Bus station 2 blocks away to take you to be The house felt like our own home for our stay. While an historic 100+ year-old traditional La Paz home, the property has been meticulously restored and brought up to modern standards, with comfy bedrooms (great beds!), spacious bathrooms (each of the 3 bedrooms has its own Ensuite bathroom, plus there is a 1/2 bath located off the backyard patio), and a large, modern kitchen with everything you need to cook a meal (Not that we did much cooking since there are so many great, affordable eateries close by). The bird theme is tastefully executed (hard to pull off but the designers are clearly pros) There is a fantastic Mezquileria directly across the street, with a great selection of drinks, plus friendly & attentive staff. This place attracts an upscale, mostly local crowd and is great fun. Be aware, it's popular and though the crowd is upscale, they still like to party on the weekends, so expect some street noise on busy nights. This was most noticeable on Friday and Saturday nights when the whole town was out and about until closing time at around 2am. Aside from this night weekend noise and some general street noise from big trucks driving by occasionally, the place is very peaceful and relaxing. The world sort of melts away when you sit in the beautiful backyard/courtyard area, with its covered outdoor living room (very comfy), lounge chairs and small plunge pool (a little cold when we were there, but you can heat it if you want to). Ana, the property manager, and Alma and her cleaning crew are amazing. Ana provided great local tips (food, tours, etc.) and was always available to answer questions. All in all, we would come back to Casa Abuelita and would highly recommend this to visitors interested in an authentic Mexican experience in a very safe, very clean and well-managed historic Baja city. We would just recommend you bring some earplugs if you are sensitive to street noise and plan to stay in one of the front bedrooms, which are near the street though through thoughtful design, have their bathrooms as insulators between bedrooms and street.
