A major part of the Qatar National Vision 2030, Lusail is a rapidly developing city. The concept originated in 2005, with construction of its 19 districts beginning soon after, partially to prepare the area as a showplace for international soccer competition. While in Doha, add a visit to Lusail to your itinerary to enjoy the facilities that are already in operation and observe the rapid pace of work to complete the rest.
The city spreads across 15,000 square miles (38,000 square kilometers), along the ocean, creating a shoreline of 17 miles (28 kilometers). Stroll along the marina walkway and gaze at a dancing fountain and luxury yachts. Commercial buildings, residential towers, hotels, restaurants and shops spread inland from the shoreline. Eventually as many as 450,000 people will live, work and vacation here.
One of the city’s highlights is the Lusail Iconic Stadium, designed to accommodate 80,000 fans for international soccer and other events. The stadium uses a state-of-the-art environmental design with cooling energy efficiency key in keeping players and fans comfortable in Qatar’s high temperatures. Park under solar collectors that keep cars out of burning sun and provide energy for the stadium and nearby buildings. Cross one of six bridges over a moat to reach the huge circular structure, whose concave roof makes it resemble a traditional dhow.
Created partially as a vacation destination for visitors from around the world, Lusail will have more than 20 tower hotels, two golf courses, theme parks, nearly 2,000 berths for boats, green parks, a new man-made canal and quiet beaches.
Many of the residential areas are located on four expanses of land known as the Qetaifan islands on the eastern side of the city. Note that the city’s plans for construction and infrastructure focus on smart implementation and eco-friendly systems.
Lusail gets its name from a rare Qatari desert flower. Travel north from Doha by car to arrive here in less than 30 minutes. Train and subway transportation here is planned. Lusail will have its own light rail train and water taxi system. You can also ride a bike or walk on the many dedicated public pathways.
