Unwind in easygoing upcountry Maui. Play your stress away on the golf course, tour a distillery or venture farther afield to explore the gorgeous countryside.
Discover the lovely town of Pukalani with an ideal location that makes it a perfect base for exploring some of Maui’s most incredible outdoor attractions. At the same time, there’s enough within the town itself to make sure that even lazy days spent near your accommodations are full and varied.
Pukalani, a name that roughly translates to “heavenly gate,” occupies a dramatic position on Mount Haleakalā’s slopes. This hillside location means it benefits from cooler weather than some of the less elevated towns nearby. It’s one of Maui’s largest settlements, but don’t let that put you off: with a population of less than 8,000, it’s lots of small-town charm.
Start your mornings with coffee at one of the little cafés in the town’s central area. Spend some time browsing the nearby shops for souvenirs before heading to Pukalani Country Club to get a few rounds in on the beautiful 18-hole golf course. Drive north to find Maui Pineapple Tours for a juicy trip around a working pineapple farm, complete with tasting sessions. Then, if the Upcountry Farmer’s Market is open, head back into town to sample even more delicious local produce.
Finish the afternoon with a trip to Hali'imaile Distillery Tour & Tasting Room. Sip local spirits as you explore the distillery, where rum, whiskey and two types of vodka are produced.
Rise early and spend your day on an adventurous out-of-town expedition. Visit Piiholo Ranch Zipline and take to the skies above the hilltops, getting an astonishing bird’s-eye view of this tropical area. Take in the scenery the traditional way, traveling the mountain’s winding trails on foot or by bike. The outdoor tour companies scattered in and around the town can offer guidance if you need it.
Pukulani is very close to Kahului Airport. Get there in less than 20 minutes by car. The best idea is renting a vehicle at the airport, which will give you the means to easily explore the wonderful landscape that surrounds this delightful town.
