Hike to mountain lookouts, relax on a surf beach or try hang gliding at one of Rio’s most stylish neighborhoods.

São Conrado is a picturesque seaside neighborhood set between the jungle-clad hills of Tijuca National Park and the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean. A long sweep of fine golden sand presents opportunities to enjoy Rio’s world-famous beach lifestyle at São Conrado. Meanwhile, adventurous visitors can go on hikes or try hang gliding.

Big waves come in consistent swells at São Conrado Beach, making it among the best surf spots in Rio. Watch experienced surfers perform tricks, go for a swim, play beach volleyball and sunbathe. Stroll along a palm-lined esplanade to Pepino Beach, where hang gliders land after drifting down from the nearby hills. Grab cold beers, fruit juices and snacks at one of the beachfront bars.

Verdant monolithic mountains give the neighborhood a spectacular backdrop and offer both excellent and challenging hikes. Trek the 3-hour, one-way route up 2,769-feet (844-meter) tall Pedra da Gávea, which is one of the world’s tallest mountains that ends in the sea. Views from the summit reach to Copacabana Beach, Christ the Redeemer Statue and Dos Irmãos Hill. An easier route takes you to the top of Pedra Bonita, a popular starting point for hang gliding adventures.

Architecture fans will enjoy a visit to Casa das Canoas, the contemporary former home of acclaimed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. Browse for the latest fashion trends, watch a movie and attend a theater show at Fashion Mall. Play a scenic round of golf at Gávea Golf and Country Club.

Sprawling across a steep hillside, neighboring Rocinha favela is the nation’s largest shantytown. Learn about the area’s history and experience the challenges of daily life faced by its residents.

São Conrado is a 25-minute drive from downtown Rio de Janeiro and accessible via public buses. Cyclists can follow a bikeway all the way from Copacabana.
