Wales

Compared to England, Wales is tiny, yet it is endowed with some of the U.K.’s most soul-stirring windswept beaches, stunning national parks and striking castles.

Wales is an outdoor playground. Trek up rolling hills, hike across Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, climb to the top of snowcapped mountaintops and enjoy invigorating walks across desolate stretches of sandy coastline.

When the sun shines, make a dash for one of Wales’ beach towns such as Llandudno, Anglesey or Barmouth. Long piers, lengthy stretches of sand and fish and chip stands are mainstays at these popular seaside resorts. Watch an old-fashioned Punch and Judy show or ride Britain’s only cable-hauled tramway at Great Orme.

Head underground and discover a whole other side to Wales via its network of caves and mines. Enjoy a boat ride through the King Arthur’s Labyrinth in Corris, where a hooded boatman will regale you with tales as you pass through the caverns and tunnels of this former underground mine. In Gwynedd, hop aboard a train through the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, 500 feet (150 meters) under the ground.

For a taster of urban Wales, stroll around the capital city of Cardiff, which is crammed with shops, museums and restaurants. Marvel at the history of the almost 2,000-year-old Cardiff Castle and take in a live show at the stunningly modern Wales Millennium Centre.

If you love the great outdoors, then a visit to Snowdonia is a must. Climb up 3,560 feet (1,085 meters) to the top of Mount Snowdon, or enjoy the more leisurely Snowdon Mountain Railway which wends its way to the top through the amazing natural scenery. Alternatively, sail or windsurf out on the waters of Abersoch on the Llŷn Peninsula, where the waters are just choppy enough to be thrilling yet safe.

The largest airport in Wales is in Cardiff, which is where most flights to the country will arrive and depart. From there, take a train, bus or coach between towns and cities. Ride one of Wales’ most scenic railways, such as the Heart of Wales Line, which cuts through some of the country’s most dramatic rolling hills.

Tune into your adventurous side in Wales, home to some of the U.K.’s most exciting natural landscapes.
