There's so much to do in Downtown Playa del Carmen, but head farther afield and you'll find even more magic. Grab a set of wheels and you can wander around the surrounding region at your own speed. Add these fantastic drives to your list:

• Cancun is about 40 miles from Downtown Playa del Carmen. Well-known tourist attractions like La Isla Shopping Mall deserve a place on your must-see list while you're in town.
• About 40 miles away, Tulum is also a hit with travelers. Make time to check out Tulum Mayan Ruins while you're here. It's one of the reasons people love coming to this colorful city.
• Get into nature and appreciate the serenity at Progreso Beach. It's approximately 170 miles from Downtown Playa del Carmen.

If you don't possess a driver's license issued in Mexico, then it's likely you'll need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence to be allowed to rent a car.
