We stayed in one of the villas, which was the quintessential Japanese ryokan experience. The room was very spacious. The outdoor onsen was perfect, but the indoor onsen could have been cleaner. The moisture from the hot spring steam seems to be taking a toll. Unfortunately, we had an awkward check-in experience being asked by one of the employees to wait outside because it wasn’t check-in time (it was 2:30pm, half an hour prior to check-in) even though other guests we had taken the shuttle from the train station with had been invited in. The rest of the check-in experience was not very warm or friendly, which tainted the rest of the stay for me. That said, the staff that served breakfast and helped us with check-out were wonderful and extremely friendly.
