Tybee Island Light Station and Museum is an iconic landmark, one of Tybee Island’s most popular attractions. General James Oglethorpe, the governor of the Georgia colony, ordered the construction of the Tybee Island Light Station in 1732. Completed in 1742, it’s one of the nation’s most intact light stations, as it’s still flanked by historic support buildings. However, much of the structure was destroyed by fire in 1861 during the Civil War. Admire the reconstructed tower standing today, which is built of metal and masonry and totally fireproof.
Be ready for the climb up 178 steps to the top. Gaze out to sea and ponder the ships the lighthouse has guided safely into the Savannah River for more than 280 years. Set aside plenty of time to take photos from all angles. From here, it’s easy to spot landmarks across the island.
After you make your descent, discover the three Light Keeper’s Cottages on the grounds. Then, visit the 1899 Military Battery that now houses the Tybee Island Museum. Exhibits inside depict the artifacts from the Euchee tribe and the history of Fort Screven, along with insights into Tybee’s Golden Era.
See the yellow cottage adjacent to the property it’s a lovely example of Tybee architecture from the 1900s. After exploring, visit the gift shop for souvenirs.
On this small barrier island, there’s plenty to do near the lighthouse. North Beach is the closest stretch of sand and it’s also home to Tybee Island Marine Science Center. Dine at the seafood restaurants of Mid Beach after a swim. South Beach is the island’s most popular white sand stretch, with the Tybee Island Pier at the center of the action.
Tybee Island Light Station and Museum is open every day except Tuesday. Purchase admission tickets at the property. Drive about 30 minutes from downtown Savannah and use the parking lot, which is free for 2 hours.
