Wander along the quaint lanes of the historic island center and sunbathe on the white-sand beaches of this glorious Mediterranean setting.

With a large harbor and intriguing history, Augusta is a scenic town on the Ionian Sea. The heart of the municipality consists of an island containing the historic sights of the Old Town, which also serves as a base for the region’s beaches. Encounter the variety of medieval structures preserved in the mesmerizing island district.

Reach the historic center via the central bridge, which has a wide sidewalk full of well-trimmed hedges and medieval ruins. Enjoy picturesque views of the Ionian Sea on either side of the bridge and enter the Old Town via the 17th-century Spanish Gate.

Among the many highlights is the hilltop Svevo Castle rising above the town. See the impressive Town Hall and bring a picnic to enjoy in the large Giardini Pubblici di Augusta park. Have snacks or drinks at a café on the Duomo Piazza and browse the shops at the Nuovo Market Giunta mall. Admire the many ecclesiastical treasures, such as the Convento Cappuccini and the Parrocchia S. Francesco Di Paola.

Head northeast to the town’s eastern cape to see the elegant Santa Croce Lighthouse. Continue north to enchanting Brucoli Bay and gaze up at its namesake lighthouse. Nearby is the early medieval Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Adonai, which overlooks the water.

Make the most of the pleasant climate with a trip to the white-sand stretch of Agnone Beach, a little north of the town. Rainfall throughout the year is low, while summers are warm to hot and winters are mild. Take a leisurely stroll between the eucalyptus trees and rent a deck chair for sunbathing.

The town is located in the province of Syracuse in southeastern Sicily. It stands between the larger towns of Catania, to the north, and Syracuse. Fly to Catania International Airport and rent a car to drive south for 25 miles (40 kilometers) to get here.

Visit the picturesque harbor town of Augusta for its stunning bay and fascinating sights.

Lovely holiday in coastal Sicily, nice pool and living area, but overall it needs lots of upkeep
"We had a lovely week in Sicily at the villa. It location is amidst a private holiday community that is right on the coast. It was a very short walk down the hill to the sea. There is also a nice restaurant/bar at the area entrance (Rey Sol). However there were a few things that didn't quite hit the ..."
