Surrounded by rolling countryside, this northeastern Pennsylvania town is known for its outdoor pursuits and excellent attractions for the entire family.

Located in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains, the city of Hazleton is a good spot for a vacation for its range of outdoor recreation opportunities. Visit to ski, hike, snowboard or embark on a driving tour across rugged mountainous terrain.

Start your trip with a gentle walk or bike ride along the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails. The 4-mile (6-kilometer) route follows the railway corridor that once transported coal. Go fishing in the area’s many lakes and streams. If you want a thrilling adventure, head to the nearby small town of Jim Thorpe for whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River.

During winter, visit the resorts of the Pocono Mountains to ski, sled, snowboard and snowmobile. Enjoy the great hiking here in the warmer weather on trails that traverse mountains and ravines, passing by waterfalls. Other activities in the mountains include four-wheel-drive tours, horseback riding, skydiving and zip-line tours. The mountains are also popular with nature lovers in the fall as the leaves of Norway poplars and other trees turn various shades of yellow.

Drive 30 minutes outside of town for a free tour of the Yuengling Brewery. The company has been producing beer since 1829 and claims to being the oldest brewery in the United States.

For a fun day with the children, drive the 70 miles (113 kilometers) to Hershey, where Hershey chocolates are made. Visit Hershey Park for its rollers coasters, rides and water park. Then pop next door to tour the factory and create your own candy bar at Hershey’s Chocolate World.

One of the liveliest times to be in Hazelton is during the second weekend of September for the annual Funfest. The colorful street festival includes a parade, car show, live music from local bands, kids’ activities, races and eating competitions.

Hazelton is close to two interstate highways and approximately 2 hours by car from New York and Philadelphia.

Come to enjoy nature and outdoor pursuits year-round.
