Olympic ValleyFamous as a former host of the Winter Olympics, this Lake Tahoe resort town is a year-round hub for outdoor sport and recreation.

Visit the scenic mountain resort of Olympic Valley for boundless outdoor adventures. From skiing and snowboarding to wilderness hikes and swimming, the area also known as Squaw Valley is a popular year-round destination. Situated in the west hills of Lake Tahoe, Olympic Valley shot to fame in 1960 when it hosted the Winter Olympics.

The centerpiece of Olympic Valley is the Squaw Valley Resort, a ski resort spread across six picturesque mountain peaks. Snow sports are the primary activity and the resort is suitable for beginner and advanced skiers. Explore 4,000 acres (1,619-hectares) of skiable terrain, including areas designated to downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, dog-sledding and snowshoeing. Bring your own equipment or rent from the resort’s stores. Beginners can also take lessons with experienced ski instructors.

When the snow melts, Olympic Valley changes from a winter sports destination to an outdoor summer paradise. Ride the cable car to High Camp, an activity center set on an 8,200-foot (2,499-meter) high peak. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Swim in a mountaintop swimming pool or relax in a hot tub. Visit the Olympic Museum to see memorabilia and watch video presentations that celebrate the 1960 Winter Olympics.

Follow hiking trails through the colorful alpine meadows of the Granite Chief Wilderness. Rent a bike to explore the family-friendly cycling trails along the Truckee River. Play a round of disc golf, which is a combination of frisbee and miniature golf.

After a busy day of activities, visit the Village at Squaw Valley. Find bars, restaurants and retail outlets situated in Bavarian-style buildings. Sip on craft beers and sample Asian, European and Mexican cuisine. Enjoy spa treatments or take part in yoga classes. Check out the work of extreme sports photographer Keoki Flagg in the Keoki Gallery.

Reach Olympic Valley by flying to Reno-Tahoe International Airport and then rent a car to get to the town and other areas of Lake Tahoe. Olympic Valley is a short drive from the beaches of Tahoe State Recreation Area, including Hurricane Bay.
