    Pocket Guide: Jamaica

Jamaica is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical weather, and friendly natives. This island nation is the third-most populous English-speaking country in the Americas, coming in after the United States and Canada. Jamaica was taken by the United Kingdom from the Spanish in 1655, and today remains a Commonwealth realm.

When visiting, make sure to sample local delicacies such as jerk chicken. Rice and peas cooked in coconut milk and filled pastry dishes known as patties are popular foods as well.

    When to Visit

The general climate of Jamaica is tropical. Weather can be hot and humid, but the inland areas have a higher altitude than the coastal areas and, as such, have a more temperate feel. Temperatures generally run between the mid 70s and high 80s year round making for perfect swimming weather.

The best time to visit Jamaica is from October to mid-December. During this time, it's easy to find cheap hotel deals in Jamaica, allowing you to find and book top rooms at special discount rates and some of the best prices of the year for Jamaica hotels. The weather during this time is at its most gorgeous, and you can avoid much of the crowds present during the busier months.

The months of January to March are when most people visit Jamaica, particularly in March. This is another good time to visit as events such as the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, the Bob Marley Birthday Bash, and Bob Marley Week take place during this period of time. This is also the most popular time for tourists to visit, so the crowds can be quite large. If booking one of the hotels in Jamaica during this time, you will want to make reservations well ahead of time.

From April to June, the island experiences a rainy season. This is a great time to visit if you are looking for a cheap Jamaica hotel deal. Some of the most amazing Jamaica hotel deals and Jamaica hotel packages are offered at rock-bottom prices. In early April, the island holds a fabulous Carnival celebration with an amazing and stunning array of colors, sounds, and an extremely fun party atmosphere.

From July to September, flights and room rates are often the lowest of any time of the year, but this is also hurricane season. Many hotels and attractions close for renovations during this time further making it one of the least favorable times to visit.

    "Luxury Vacation"
We upgraded to the Don Pablo Luxury accommodations upon our arrival as our anniversary gift to each other and it was awesome. Maid & Butler service, 24 hour room service, adult only pool & restaurants...wow! Not to mention Premium drinks, internet in your room and a lounge with bar, snacks, computers, books and games. We stayed 3 nights for a quick getaway and it was very relaxing with a lot to do. The jerk chicken at the snack bar was the best I've ever had. I tried curried goat & chicken, ox tails and so many other Jamaican dishes that were excellent. We plan to go back and I have no complaints.

From check in to check out the staff were friendly relaxed and made you feel very at home. I believe it was because they were more mature and professional than the staff at other hotels I have stayed at in Montego Bay Jamaica. Food excellent, drinks same. Grounds and building very well maintained. An issue I had was handled very professionally by manager and his staff. Am very impressed. Hope nothing changes when Sagicor Bank takes over ownership in January, 2014

    "Loved it!"
This hotel was located on a nice stretch of the 7-mile beach that was perfect for exploring the area. All the music, dancing, drinking, dining, activities, and vendors were just a short walk away. The staff was hospitable and helpful. The standard beach room was clean and comfortable- the a/c, mini fridge, and bathroom worked just fine without any problems. The grounds and beach itself was also very nice, and overall it felt as safe as any other nearby places for us girls. So right next door was an awesome, small, family-owned restaurant/bar that had good cheap food where we had dinner every night. Kind of in the same spot was a cool lady that did braids and massages. There were also a couple larger bars/patios a little further down from there that were great for music and dancing. On the other side of the hotel were vendors selling goods and further down from there were larger music clubs. And we pretty much had fun at those spots on the beach. It was nice meeting the locals and other travelers. We also had a great driver/guide named Chef that went above and beyond expectations and was really good at helping us make the most out of the trip by sharing his knowledge and passion for the country. We got to see the beautiful mineral springs, caves, and landscape of Roaring River because of him.

"Great staff great food great beach"
Booking for meals other than at buffet needs to be done more fairly to all. Food is however excellent everywhere. Staff are amazing. Painting accomodation was a smelly pain and lack of coffee mc in room a drag and room always seemed to be clean but smelled musty. Location is too far for walking to local attractions and taxi is expensive. Hotel shuttle would be a good idia. Self drive is not for gentle spuls- roads are bad and drivers seem to jave a death wish. I would go again- had a great time.

    "Second Time Around"
My wife and I love Couple Swept Away, The resort is very beautiful by itself but make this the best is thier Staff. They are there no matter what it may be!!!!. We want to send a special thanks to Elton, Edon, Ashanie, Cedrick, Jullien, you guys rock!!!. The only thing that is slightly down this time was beach bars, The service there could be better espeically at the Sunset bar. Server were a little bit cold to the people. Seven mile beach is very beautiful, the sand feel great between your toes and the Ocean water is always inviting. It only Rained once there all the days we were there. Not bad for the rainy season.
