Georgia State Railroad Museum is a National Historic Landmark and educational facility built around a site once integral to the development of the state of Georgia. The museum is housed in one of the largest and oldest railroad operations complexes in the United States. Wander through the grounds and see steam locomotives, rail cars, steam-powered machinery and model railroads.

This museum features 13 of the railway’s original structures. View a fully functioning rail turntable, built in the early 20th century, along with a 120-foot (35-meter) tall brick smokestack. The Georgia State Railroad Museum is filled with significant buildings, machinery and railroad history.

Browse permanent exhibits in five of the complex’s buildings. Exhibits look at the Central of Georgia Railway and the history of the railroad complex. Learn how the city of Savannah and the Coastal Heritage Society established the museum in the late 20th century. Notice the former mid-19th century Central of Georgia passenger station. This remarkable building was one of the first railway stations in Georgia and now houses the Savannah Visitors Center.

Examine the Central of Georgia No. 223, one of the museum’s finest steam locomotives. Numerous Central of Georgia passenger and office cars are located throughout the museum grounds. The museum also features tank engines and industrial diesel locomotives.

Georgia State Railroad Museum is one of three museums in Tricentennial Park.
