"Beautiful place but our mattress was so hard, I lost sleep! There was a point where I considered sleeping on the floor, as I thought it might be more comfortable, and my partner developed back and hip pain. The staff was lovely, everyone was so friendly and the grounds were absolutely beautiful. About a 20 minute walk from city centre, the location was also great! Apart from the mattress, I would definitely recommend to stay here. "

"The rooms were excellent, and the king-sized beds are superb. We were very early, but the rooms were ready and the gentleman at reception checked the availability of the rooms, and as they were ready, he allowed us to access them - a rare treat. Breakfast was delicious and copious. The only 2 minor issues are the lifts, which need multiple presses of the buttons at times and the coffee in the bar was disappointing. No expresso cups, and no decaffeinated option other than powdered DIY sachets."

"From the moment we walked through the door to the moment we left The New Holgate was warm, friendly and relaxing. The guy that was on reception was so helpful and showed us to our room. The room was spotless and very inviting. The bathroom clean and everything as it should be. Checking in and out on the email that was sent made it seamless and gave us a little extra time to relax. The hotel is situated far enough from the centre of York to be peaceful but close enough to walk there in approx. 10 mins. The only down side being really picky was the water pressure for both the shower and bath. The shower almost trickled out and the bath took and eternity to fill. That being said it wasn't enough to ruin our stay. We would highly recommend and will certainly be returning."

"The river rooms are best as there is alot of early morning traffic in the roadside rooms. Other than that the hotel and staff were great."

"Very nice room, modern, clean, no complaints there. Contrary to name it’s a little out of the City Centre, easily walkable unless the weather turns on you, which it did to us one night. The lack of a restaurant for dinner then became disappointing (staff pointed us towards a poor Italian across the road) generally speaking a nice hotel though "

"Breakfast was good. Orange juice was very cheap though - not freshly squeezed. Old part of the building is very impressive. Charging for a small bottle of water in the room is unacceptable. Hotel could do with a gym as well."
