Mesopotamia is a vast green and tropical expanse that has some of Argentina’s most idyllic landmarks. It contains the world-famous Iguazú Falls, which is among the widest and tallest waterfalls in the world. Travel around this lush area for its exotic animals and vegetation and small towns with thriving culture.
The highlight of the region is the Iguazú National Park, which consists of tropical forests and the roaring waterfall that can be seen from the Brazilian and Argentine sides of the park. Wander through the forests to spot exotic creatures, such as tapirs, anteaters and ocelots.
The town of Puerto Iguazú outside the park has many steak restaurants and the Three Borders Mark, which has a fountain and a view of the Brazilian and Paraguayan flanks of the river. Bring the kids to the Hummingbird Garden (Jardin de los Picaflores).
Travel south for a few hours by bus to reach the Ibera Wetlands, which contains extraordinary flooded forests. It is a maze of water networks stretching across an area of 3.2 million acres (1.3 million hectares) with fascinating animals roaming its wet fields. Nearby is Posadas, where you will find the San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge linking Argentina and Paraguay.
At the southern end of the area is Gualeguaychú, which hosts a thriving carnival around the Gualeguaychú Plaza San Martín at the beginning of Lent. Listen to the Chamamé folk music of the area that blends Spanish guitar and accordion.
Located in the northeastern region of Argentina, Mesopotamia lies on the borders with Paraguay and Brazil. It incorporates the provinces of Entre Ríos, Corrientes and Misiones. Fly to Cataratas del Iguazú International Airport and stay in the town of Puerto Iguazú during your trip to the falls. Get around the vast region by bus. Expect scorching summers with heavy rainfall and warm winters. Try the Argentine traditional hot beverage of mate, a herbal tea made from leaves from the yerba plant, which is mostly grown in this area.
Mesopotamia is made up of fertile land with gushing cascades, exotic flora and fauna and intriguing towns.
