Inspect the ruins of temples and churches in colonial towns and explore the tranquil resort towns on the Riviera Nayarita.
Nayarit is a serene and picturesque state with a beach-laden riviera, a group of idyllic islands and an intriguing indigenous history. Much of the state overlooks the Pacific Coast, while quaint colonial villages adorn the inland region. Travel through the state to appreciate the great range of scenery and cultures.
Spend some time in the state capital of Tepic for its museums, parks and cultural attractions. Stroll through the historic center to gaze up at the majestic Government Palace and the Sanctuary of Guadalupe. Admire the twin spires of the Tepic Cathedral and visit Juan Escutia Museum and Nayarit Regional Museum. Relax with a picnic in Alameda Park and stroll down its forested trails.
Travel southwest to the Riviera Nayarita and stay at a campground in Sayulita. Explore the Sayulita Farmers Market and relax in Sayulita Square. Bring your kids to enjoy the activities on the Rancho Mi Chaparrita, including horseback riding, surf lessons and trips to the idyllic Marietas Islands.
Nearby is the town of Rincon de Guayabitos, which has many restaurants and cafés. Try the fish rinds, shrimp tamales and marlin tacos that are among the culinary delights served up on the Riviera Nayarita.
Enjoy the comfortable warm weather here with some time at the beach. Relax in the modern resort of Nuevo Vallarta, which has activities for the whole family. Go to El Cora Crocodile Sanctuary and the Aquaventuras Park Vallarta.
Move around the coast to beach resort towns, such as Punta Mita and San Blas. The latter has Las Islitas Beach and El Borrego Beach as well as intriguing sights, such as La Marinera Temple Ruins and Contaduria Ruins.
Locate the state of Nayarit in the western part of Mexico, surrounded by the states of Jalisco, Sinaloa and Zacatecas. Fly to Puerto Vallarta International Airport and travel north to enter the state. Get around by buses and taxis.
