South Park Blocks

An oasis of green in the bustling downtown, this corridor of parks provides relaxation for city dwellers and a picturesque setting of Portland’s cultural life.

The South Park Blocks of Portland are a verdant refuge in the heart of the city. For about a dozen city blocks, the concrete environment of downtown gives way to green grass, stately trees and public art. Whether you’re here to relax or just passing through, slow down and appreciate the park’s tranquility.

First donated for public use in 1852, the Portland Park Blocks are the city’s oldest parks. Despite humble origins, they have been landscaped and lovingly maintained since 1877, when 104 Lombardy poplars and elms were planted on the site. Enjoy the shade of these tall trees.

Walk to the southern end of the blocks to the lovely Portland State University campus. This area has been pedestrianized since 1973, ensuring a pleasant unbroken green space for students and visitors to congregate.

As you stroll around the park, stop to smell the roses, quite literally. The explosion of autumn color here is one of the finest in Portland. Look for nearly 340 magnificent elms, maples and oak trees throughout the blocks.

Look for public artworks in and around the park. These range from Roy Lichtenstein’s Brushstroke sculpture to a 12-foot (3.7-meter) statue of Teddy Roosevelt on horseback and a grand figure of Abraham Lincoln, alongside sculptural works from Oregon artists.

Visit on Saturdays to enjoy the year-round Portland Farmers Market, with a variety of farmers and artisan producers in 140 stall spaces. Watch chef demonstrations or listen to live music as you savor local specialties in the picturesque surroundings.

The blocks form the heart of Portland’s cultural precinct. Adjacent streets are lined with institutions well worth visiting. Head to the Portland Art Museum, which hosts fine collections of Native American and Northwest art in addition to modern European and American works. The Oregon Historical Society museum is dedicated to telling the story of the state and its people, from indigenous groups to settlers and later immigrant communities.

Find the South Park Blocks in downtown Portland, an easy walk from numerous other attractions. There is plenty of on-street parking on nearby streets; the university also has parking garages and lots.
