Originally designed by James Wyatt for the 4th Earl of Darnley of Cobham Hall in 1783, it was never consecrated and so never used as a mausoleum. The architecture is classically inspired (the Earl may have wanted to replicate Roman/Greek temples seen on his travels across Europe) but has a unique pyramid roof. The building was heavily vandalised (including a stack of tyres placed inside and set alight) but later restored with the help of a lottery grant and was transferred to the National Trust in 2013 which now runs open days. It once featured on the TV show 'Restoration'.
