![St Martin's Church , Haddington St Martin's Church was originally a chapel belonging to St Mary's Nunnery (located about a mile to the east). It was built in the early 12th century, and was altered in the 13th century when a structure was vaulted and buttresses added. It was probably used by both the nuns and the people of Haddington. In the 17th century, it became a Protestant place of worship but eventually fell into decay. ![Entrance to Nunraw Abbey Nunraw started as a monastic grange owned by the nuns of Haddington. The last prioress bequeathed it to the Hepburn family who built a castle in the grounds. It was restored in 1863, and in 1945 it was taken over by Cistercian monks from Ireland. The present church at Whittinghame (pron. with soft g and silent h) was greatly rebuilt in 1722 on the site of a church erected in 1225 to replace a 7th century church, at nearby Luggate Burn, dedicated by St. Cuthbert, the Apostle of the Lothians. Many famous men have been laid to rest in this historic place including the 1st Earl Balfour of Whittinghame, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The battlements of this fine church are reminiscent more of churches in Dorset and Somerset, stand aloft on high ground in the tiny parish. ![St Martin's Church , Haddington St Martin's Church was originally a chapel belonging to St Mary's Nunnery (located about a mile to the east). It was built in the early 12th century, and was altered in the 13th century when a structure was vaulted and buttresses added. It was probably used by both the nuns and the people of Haddington. In the 17th century, it became a Protestant place of worship but eventually fell into decay. "We had a fantastic stay at the Adagio. We were a family of four staying ina one bed apartment. The apartment was ready earlier than stated (we arrived for about 1pm) and so managed to check in early. The apartment itself had loads of space, plenty of room for four of us, and was clean. Breakfast was great, loads to choose from (hot and cold) and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Excellent location just a short walk from the train station and a lovely stroll (uphill) to reach the castle along the Edinburgh Mile. Couldn’t have asked for a better stay. Would highly recommend!"
