With its organ recitals and celebrations, the largest church in Manchester is a key part of the student campus and university life.

For a fine example of gothic revival architecture, visit Holy Name Church in the middle of the University of Manchester campus. Dating back to the 19th century, this church has a stunning interior with colorful stained-glass windows, impressive altarpiece and myriad sculptures. While visiting the church, chat with students and other worshippers from the surrounding community.

Arrive outside the church and appreciate the intricacies of the gothic facade, with a prominent rose window in the middle. A single tower rises from the center, with a gabled roof behind it.

Enter the structure and enjoy the utter serenity within these walls, as you consider joining others in prayer or contemplation. Read the panel that pays tribute to the fallen heroes of World War I. You can also light candles in memory of your own lost loved ones.

The church stands out as a place of religious worship in the center of the busy University of Manchester. Arrive for some of the regular events in the spiritual haven, including organ recitals, celebrations and group prayers.

Note that the site is an important part of local culture, having been referred to by name in the song by The Smiths, Vicar in a Tutu. It was also the location of the funeral of local actress Pat Phoenix in the 1980s.

Holy Name Church is in the Chorlton-on-Medlock district, in the southeastern part of central Manchester. It is between the Victoria Park district and Spinningfields. Ride a bus from the city center for about 15 to 20 minutes to get to the church. It’s open to the public on weekdays from morning until late afternoon and on Sundays in the mornings.

While you’re in this part of the city, visit the other attractions of the University of Manchester campus, such as The Whitworth gallery and Manchester Museum.
