In a bustling college town in the middle of the Great Plains, experience a slice of authentic Texas with a hearty dose of culture on the side.

In the wide expanse of the Great Plains region of Texas, Lubbock stands out like a beacon. Known as the Hub City, Lubbock is the epicenter of the South Plains. It has three universities and a thriving cotton industry.

Although this area of Texas is known for hot, drysummer weather, it is conducive to grape growing and has a budding wine industry. Llano Estacado Winery is the state’s most celebrated winery. McPherson Cellars, another favorite, is located in Lubbock’s historic Coca-Cola bottling plant.

Lubbock has a variety of venues to interest visitors of all ages. For a classic carnival experience, head to Joyland Amusement Park’s roller coasters and arcade games. Learn about science and technology at the Science Spectrum, an interactive, hands-on museum with a small aquarium. While there, watch a movie at the OMNI Theater, where the massive domed screen allows you to feel like you’re part of the movie.

You’ll also enjoy Lubbock’s diverse arts scene. Watch a performance from Ballet Lubbock or listen to classical masterpieces and other musical genres from the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Get tickets to a performance at the Cactus Theater, considered the home of live entertainment in West Texas. Everyone will enjoy the famed First Friday Art Trail on the first Friday of every month, where art, music and fun meet.

Cheer on the Texas Tech University Red Raiders at one of the sporting events held year-round. On Independence Day, 4th on Broadway attracts over 100,000 visitors to enjoy a street fair and fireworks. Every September thousands come for 1950s rock celebrating the birthday of local son Buddy Holly. Later learn about the pioneering days with a visit to the National Ranching Heritage Center.

It’s easy to fly into the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport, just north of the city. Lubbock is surrounded by wide West Texan plains, but within the city limits you would never guess it. This lively city is worth a visit to experience authentic Texas at its best.

The hot tub was wonderful on a cold night. The home was spacious with very comfortable beds. We loved the large kitchen table for game nights. The only negative was we were unable to get the fireplaces lit.
