Where to stay

in Acapulco

One of Guerrero state's first resort towns, Acapulco has been a popular Pacific coast escape since the 1950s. Its neighborhoods might not reflect Mexican culture at its most authentic, but it's where vacationers and sometimes spring-breakers flock to spend days snorkeling, surfing, fishing, and sunbathing, before enjoying nights at some of the best bars and clubs the coastline has to offer. Aside from the almost year-round good weather, another big part of Acapulco's appeal is its affordable accommodations: a stay here doesn't have to break the bank. Many of Acapulco's hotels offer week-long all-inclusive packages, and private villas with pools are plentiful.

Top Neighborhoods for Beaches

John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy are among the most famous names to have honeymooned in Acapulco's Zona Dorada, the "golden zone" hugging the town's wine-glass-shaped bay. It's still the best area to choose for the widest stretch of beach, top outdoor activities, and the most varied accommodations, although some of the high-rises are more aesthetically appealing than others. Acapulco's Diamante neighborhood to the south of the center is more refined and places to stay are accordingly upscale. Puerto Marques is the best beach here, backed by five-star resorts. Nearby Playa Revolcadero is also becoming increasingly popular, offering good surf and horseback rides along the beach.

Best Places to Stay for Nightlife

Acapulco has a reputation as a party town, and once the sun goes down, everything from cheap tequila and buckets of beers to classy cocktails can be found in the Zona Dorada. Book a room near Playa Condesa and the Costera Acapulco for the best day-to-night bar scene tantalizingly close to the beach. For gamblers, there are also a handful of casinos just back from the shore. Hillside Las Brisas, on the bay's southern curve, is best known for its luxury hotel of the same name, but there are also some swanky bars and clubs here with great views over the ocean.

Costera Acapulco

Costera Acapulco is beloved for its stunning beaches. Take some time to explore sights in the area like Diana the Huntress and Condesa Beach.

Where to Stay for Family Activities

With a bit of planning, Acapulco can be a great family break. Picking the right area to stay is essential. Diamante is a good choice for those looking for a relatively calm neighborhood and smart accommodations. For older kids, snorkeling and scuba-diving are on offer in Puerto Marques. It's also worth considering booking a hotel near Old Acapulco to the west of the Zona Dorada for historical attractions. Little ones will be amazed by the famous divers at the cliffs of Quebrada, who plunge into the ocean from a height of 35 meters (115 feet). With young ones in tow, consider avoiding hotels outside of the main tourist areas due to safety concerns.
