Carson City Independent Hotels & Suites

We didn't really know what to expect at the Border House, but overall we were happy with what we got. The odd bits were that the Border House was just that- it looked and felt like a private house. There was no check-in facility inside, we had to go into the casino to find the check-in desk, so that was a bit complicated. The other odd thing was that there was a gas fireplace in the room which was also open to the bathroom, overlooking the bathtub. In theory this could be quite lovely if you were at the hotel as an intimate couple, but we were there as a family with nearly adult children, so it led to some embarrassment to basically to visual access from the bedroom to everything going on in the bathroom. But other than that, we really liked the place. It was surprisingly quiet, reasonably convenient to Squaw Valley and Northstar. There was a little restaurant inside the casino that had great breakfast and dinner specials and there was ample garage parking close by.

Overall the hotel is nice. Breakfast could be improved a LOT, the rooms were good, but mine had very squeaky floors and luckily is was over the carport entrance so there wasn't anyone underneath to hear it. It's in a nice, walking distance to a few bars / restaurants / Casino but remember, it is literally ON Hwy. 395 so you do hear the traffic a bit.

Excellent stay except for smoke in Casino. That also worked its way into the hallways adjacent to the Casino. Hotel is non smoking and I had to initial as such, but smoke was not acceptable. Hotel needs better system for handling smoke. Also smoke smell was evident in both restaurants

This was my third weekend stay here. There are lots of fancier hotels with more amenities to choose from nearby, but if you are looking for the basics at a very reasonable price this is an excellent choice. Everything was well-maintained and clean. The beds were comfortable. There was a table and two chairs in the room. The staff was efficient and friendly. There is a continental breakfast included in the price, and an ARCO gas station right across the street. A one block walk brings you to Red's Old 395 Grill - which is a fun place to eat with good grill food and 101 beers. There was a microwave, refrigerator and small sink in our room, which could have saved us a lot of money on food, if we were staying longer. (Families take note!) There was a hairdryer in the bathroom, but no iron. The desk attendant got an iron and ironing board for us right away on request. There wasn't a coffee maker (didn't matter to me). There is no smoking in the hotel - which I really appreciated. There is even a bookshelf near the front desk full of books to read along with a large variety of tourist brochures.

Good rooms just a little thin walled. Good food in both cafés.

Good hotel, good location Older building, but well maintained

The facility was really nice. We will visit again with friends and family. We would recommend this to everyone. Plenty of room.

We wanted to be near Lake Tahoe so this hotel was a good location for us. We only wanted a night stop over. Staff were nice enough but interior was very dated!! Nice pool. Had a good breakfast which seemed to be cheaper than anything we had experienced in California in the week before!
