"Love this hotel"

"Very new hotel with 14 rooms, loved the simplistic yet unique decor by world renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Hotel exterior blended in very well with the local natural environments. Check-in with the tablet quick and easy, rooms had large balcony/window with double-layered curtains offering ample sunlight during daytime while maintaining darkness for a good night's sleep. Our room was well equipped with large beds, a comfortable dining/sofa area, small cooking area with fridge & cooking hob, clothes washer/dryer, double bathroom sink, etc. overall everything you would need for a long stay including ample car parking in front of the hotel. Looked exactly like the pictures on the hotel website."

"The beds are quite comfortable despite looking old and simple. Only 1 bathroom and 1 toilet but we make do with it for 5 people. It's spacious enough for 5 persons. Hotel facilities are good enough for us for 2 nights."

"The hotel was great and had your own parking, but not walking distance from anything; however very close driving distance to tourist spots. Location of the hotel is right next to the expressway entrance to either go to Oita or Yufuin, your like in the middle. Overall excellent hotel!! "

"I give this property 5 stars for staff because they were amazing. From the front desk staff, to the waiters, to the food servers to the maids - everyone was so nice and helpful and smiling. The room was stunning. Classic Japanese tatami mat room but with western toilet and deep soaking tub. We had ocean view. STUNNING! You should stay here. I need to say - that while I know the hotel is older, and there's charm in that - this hotel needs a deep clean. The closet and vents were dusty and the bathroom had some mold. It's a very humid place, so that's difficult to keep clean - but just a little more bleach a poll nd this is a 5-Star resort. I would stay there again the food was outrageously wonderful and plentiful. Thank you for a wonderful stay"

"A bit tricky if you don’t have a car. With that in mind, I can say that the room is bigger than most, the deep bath is nice and there’s free coffee/chocolate in the community room. Free single entry tickets to an onsen place within 5 min walk are also given at check in if you don’t want to make your way to Kannawa. The hotel seems to be making an effort."

"Everything was great. Excellent service but was surprised when I booked that dinner was not included as with most other ryokans."

"The two of us enjoyed a very pleasant stay and slept comfortably on the Japanese futons. The facility is in good condition and has a wonderful public bath to wash off the stress of the day. Free hot refreshments are available anny time and the breakfast was excellent. Many nice restaurants are a short walk away. Wish I could have stayed longer."

"A peaceful and relaxing simple retreat. Old style ryokan with tatami mats etc. We used the men only onsen and were basically alone in there. It was very clean and hot. Perfect. Also they offered complimentary coffee, tea and ramen cup. They provided everything we needed for using the baths. "

"Beautiful, modern, very tastefully decorated property. The front desk attendee was very hospitable, a warm welcome to our first time in Yufuin! Gems is a minute walk from the station / bus stop, and is located centrally to Yufuin town. The walk to Kinrin lake was beautiful, with views of the mountain on the street. The room we booked was incredibly spacious, and although designed for 4, did not feel too empty for 2. The bathroom is so well done and so clean, with a huge bath tub that just invites a private soak. We would stay again next time! "
