Head east to the city’s iconic Kitsuki Castle. This elegant structure is heralded as Japan’s smallest castle. Enter to see samurai swords and have a photo taken in a traditional helmet. Climb up the plateau for views over the sea and Beppu Bay.

Walk west to the Kitsuki Castle Town Historical Museum. Formerly a samurai residence, this local history museum has exhibits related to the city’s fascinating past. Learn about local fishing and the region’s traditional folk tales. For a different experience of history, visit nearby Kitsuki Retrokan. Its large collection of retro memorabilia includes musical instruments, toys and a vintage car.

Stroll uphill to photograph Kitsuki's unique sandwich shape, with samurai residences on plateaus north and south of a central commercial district. You won’t see power lines or modern signage around these residences some are open to the public but hidden behind mud walls. Visit the Ohara Residence, a fine thatched-roof home, traditional kitchen and elegant garden.

Wander through the merchant town, perusing the main street’s Edo-style stores. Stop for sake tasting at a historic brewery or relax with a traditional tea ceremony. Look for the plaster relief paintings known as kote-e, whose symbols are intended to ward off bad luck and attract fortune.

Historic Kitsuki is a popular setting for wearing traditional Japanese dress. Visit a local store and pick out your own kimonoto rent for the full day or for a brief photo shoot.

Drive to Kitsuki in 20 minutes from Oita Airport, with Beppu a 50-minute bus ride away. Navigate the historic center on foot or ride a taxi or bus. Visit Kitsuki in springtime for Kitsuki Castle Festival’s traditional festivities.
