Provence - Alpes - Cote d'Azur

Glamorous nightlife, stunning Mediterranean views, exciting winter sports and beautiful natural landscapes make this French region a perennial favorite.

Provence–Alpes–Cote d’Azur, nestled in the south of France along the Mediterranean coast, is a destination for all seasons. Enjoy long walks by the water in Monaco or Marseille during summer. Thrill seekers can ski through the French Alps in the winter or go rafting down an alpine river in the spring.

Visit Provence–Alpes–Cote d’Azur to experience one of France’s most popular vacation destinations. Experience everyday rural French life in remote towns and villages, or head for cosmopolitan cities like Marseille, which blend uniquely French customs with an international sensibility.

Admire the glitz and glamor of St. Tropez, a small fishing village turned vacation destination for the rich and famous. Dance nights away in its upscale nightclubs and spend days wandering the atmospheric streets of La Ponche, the old fishing quarter.

Head to Avignon for some history lessons, including a stop at the massive Gothic palace of Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes). Join a guided tour to find out about its wide halls and 14th-century frescos. Next to Palais des Papes is the Avignon Cathedral, which holds a captivating collection of prized religious artifacts.

Provence–Alpes–Cote d’Azur is well-geared toward outdoor adventure. Climb Mont Ventoux in northern Provence and look for the snake eagle, a rare bird that can be spotted on the mountain.

The region comes alive in the summer months, with July and August being the peak tourist season. The alpine areas also get busy during the winter ski season. Visit from April to June for comfortable temperatures and beautiful spring flowers.

Two major airports serve the region, Marseille Provence and Nice Cote d’Azur. Rent a car from an airport or major town to travel at your own pace. Manual transmissions are much more common here, so book ahead to ensure an automatic car. Trains are also reliable. For a picturesque journey that passes beautiful backcountry scenery, take the Train des Pignes from Nice to Digne-les-Bains.

Whether you want an oceanfront vacation, an adventurous mountain trek or a taste of French lifestyle, you will find it in Provence–Alpes–Cote d’Azur.
