Cerro de la Z is a mountain at the southern tip of Baja California Peninsula overlooking the Gulf of California. Hiking trails wind up to the summit, which provides panoramic views of the water, the beaches and the dramatic coastline around the town of Cabo San Lucas. Bring supplies for a picnic and find a smooth rock at the peak to eat, chat and appreciate the vista.
Notice the tranquility as you begin your ascent on the meandering trail. You’ll soon be able to the see the pyramidal peak of the hill in the distance, with cacti and other arid vegetation making up the foreground. At the summit is an observatory in a white circular building enclosed by a stone wall. See the iconic white ball that tops the edifice.
Embark on the trails with your family at dawn to reach the top in time for the sunrise. Go jogging or do yoga in these scenic surroundings. You can also get spectacular views at dusk, when the sun dips beyond the horizon. Look for the silhouettes of rock formations surrounding the bay. After sunset, Cabo San Lucas seems to come alive with bright lights.
Participate in the Marina a Cerro de la Z run, which lasts 9.8 miles (15.8 kilometers) and rises 1,036 feet (316 meters). Bring a hat and plenty of water for your trip to the top, particularly on hot summer afternoons.
The trail and mountain are accessible to the public free of charge at all times. Wear appropriate shoes, particularly on rainy days.
Cerro de la Z is in the southwestern region of Cabo San Lucas. Walk to the summit from the heart of the town in about 45 to 60 minutes. Stop along the way as you pass other attractions such as the Parque Mágico children’s playground and the Centro Judío de Cabo.
