Pocked with volcanic rock formations, Playa las Viudas may appear to be a beach from another planet. Tide pools and jagged rocks adorn this tranquil and remote bay, known for its excellent views. Bring a basket filled with snacks and bottles of wine for a secluded picnic against the dramatic backdrop.
Watch your kids frolic on the rocks that rise up from the sandy beach. These natural structures create an otherworldly setting, reminiscent of the terrain on the moon. Explore the little coves, inlets and crevasses in this picturesque strand. Take shelter from the hot afternoon sun in the shade of one of the larger volcanic rocks.
Note that the sea here is not ideal for swimming, due to pointed rock edges. More advanced swimmers can snorkel or scuba dive along the reef that lies beneath the shimmering surface of the Gulf of California.
Enjoy paddling with care through the calm and clear water and spot colorful fish. Stay for the sunset and go for a romantic walk along the shore. At night, the starry sky reveals itself in this isolated spot away from city lights.
In keeping with the secluded setting, the strand has no restaurants or vendors. Bring sunscreen, a hat and enough water for your time here. Use the portable bathroom facilities on the beach, which are free to access at all times. The stretch of sand was formerly known as the Twin Dolphin Beach, in reference to an earlier hotel.
Find the Playa las Viudas in the eastern outskirts of Cabo San Lucas. It is at the beginning of the coastal corridor that leads toward San José del Cabo. Park your car in the beach’s small parking lot. Travel to some of the neighboring sights, such as Playa Cabo Bello, Sheraton Beach and Cabo del Sol Golf.
