An excellent ryokan that wasn’t too far from the main station. It was extremely quiet and relaxing. The baths are reservation only which was a nice plus with COVID and all. Some of the other rooms mentioned a poor smell but I did not encounter it. I think they might not be used to the smell of the tatami mats? The food was excellent as well! Would stay again.

Private onsen is great; some caveats
Booked a room with private onsen. Comfortable and large room, with nice amenities. Private onsen was great. The ryokan itself is very spacious and has a significant number of onsen to visit within the facilities, which are all quite nice. Location is within a 10 minute walk from the Hakone Yumoto station. Service was a bit disappointing: our hostess only talked to and looked my Japanese partner in the eye, despite me speaking and arranging the check in and admin processes in Japanese. I understand this is a traditional ryokan but this is a tourist area (and not a low cost place to stay) so I’d expect better. Breakfast and dinner were not bad but some dishes could have been better - the tempura was cold, for instance. Overall, I had a good time, with a few caveats per the above.
