WE ARE OPEN! Authentic log cabin on Paint Creek, 0.5 mi to Appalachian Trail

Viking Mountain Lodge is an old, 2200 square foot log cabin located inside the Cherokee National Forest near the Appalachian Trail. The cabin sits high up in the Smoky Mountains about halfway between the quaint mountain town of Hot Springs, North Carolina and the historic town of Greeneville, Tennessee. The two story structure is made of rough cut hemlock logs that are hand hewn on the exterior side. With four bedrooms and two full bathrooms, VML has the ability to sleep 15 guests making it well suited for large groups or family reunions.

VML overlooks Paint Creek which runs the width of the four acre property. Whether you’re sitting on the front porch in the handmade cypress furniture, on the deck in the rocking/adirondack chairs, or inside with the windows open, you can listen to the peaceful melody from the rushing waters of Paint Creek. Our guests frequently comment that this alone is worth trip to Viking Mountain Lodge. There is a fire pit in the front yard down by the water’s edge for roasting marshmallows or keeping warm on a cool evening. You can trout fish in the creek or catch bream in the larger of the two ponds on the property.

Go for a day hike on the AT. Have a picnic on top of Camp Creek Bald. Go whitewater rafting on the French Broad River. Fly fish Big Laurel Creek. Head to historic Greeneville Tennessee and visit one of the many museums. Most of all, RELAX!

Although the cabin is rustic, it has all of the amenities of home; a large, fully stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, linens, towels, wood stove, gas fireplace, 6 brand new ceiling fans, gas/charcoal/smoker combination grill, and even a 50” HDTV with Bose sound bar for those cold or rainy days. All of this in a spacious, clean cabin decorated with numerous Bev Doolittle prints and many pieces of antique furniture. PLEASE NOTE: The cabin does not have air conditioning. Like most homes in the area, it’s typically not needed. Also, there is no internet or cell service at the cabin. Most people find it very refreshing to unplug and spend some undistracted time with each other and with nature. Please keep these things in mind when booking.

relaxing and peaceful

Alan was a great host! The cabin was extremely clean, and had so much space! The kids loved the fire pit and yard games and the stream! Kitchen was easy to cook in- at first it was hard with no service but was SO NICE to disconnect! We can wait to come back during warmer weather

Fantastic cabin and location!

We rented Viking Mountain Lodge for my mom’s 80th birthday (4 adults and 1 yellow lab). The cabin is as advertised - beautiful location and everything we needed. recommend the drive to the top of Viking Mountain and the hike to Blackstack Cliffs. The village of Hot Springs is really cool and the AT runs straight through downtown. Highly recommend this cabin to anyone wanting to hike parts of the Appalachian Trail!

The location is remote and I needed this time away. Work regularly takes over my waking hours and our short time here allowed me to reconnect with the grandchildren. Thank you!

Loved it!

This property was very quiet and peaceful. Our family of 10 that stayed here loved it the kids played on the hills and by the creek from sun up to sun down. House stayed warm without using the wood burning stove. And there was plenty of space.

Get Away

The bridge to the property has a steep drop off that scraped the bottom of my car. Getting in the lockbox for the key was difficult ,had to go to neighbor for property manager info. due to no wifi at the cabin to use cell phone . No heat in the bathrooms . Would only recommend if these problems was addressed.

Beautiful Location

Viking mountain is breathtaking. However the lodge was not very clean and the odor was almost unbearable. There is a horrible musty smell. The bathrooms had hair on the vanities and bathtubs from previous guests. I was able to clean up the bathrooms but the musty odor was there to stay. Febreeze did help but not nearly enough. I recommend pulling up all the rugs and carpeting. I think that is the source of most of the smell.

Freezing in cabin with no heat

The temperature outside was 20 degrees. Only one heater worked down stairs. It was like sleeping outside. Carpet has holes. Bathroom was from the 70s, blue with rust enclosure. No internet or cell service. Only TV downstairs. The drop off from road to cabin is 2 feet so the bottom of your car scraps each time, hope your have a mufflers after stay.

Beautiful place

Loved the house! Loved the location (gorgeous!) Only issues where with the outside. The pictures of the property make it seem very remote and not around other properties. There is a house directly across the street that has full view of the property - also the driveway is shared with other owners that live further up the road. We loved that we could bring our pet - we just didn't like that there is a not so friendly golden retriever that frequently comes on the property (wouldn't go further than the firepit - but with our dog there, we felt we couldn't really relax outside. Overall, wouldve been five stars if not for the surrounding properties (or if we knew about them) as well as for the dogs around the property. Thank you!

Nice Getaway

Our Christmas gift to our grown kids was a week at VML, 7 adults and 2 dogs. We loved the area and the seclusion. It’s a short drive into Hot Springs for a quick break and an hour from Asheville, which was a fantastic day trip. The cabin is very well stocked and equipped. It's rustic, but not too much so. The property is beautiful, and the drive up to Viking Mountain Overlook is a must. The negatives reflect other recent reviews. There are close neighbors with dogs (3-4 of them) that barked most of the time, whether we were outside or not, day and night. We cooked hot dogs at the fire pit and two of them were there trying to get food from us. We didn’t take our dogs out with us because of this. We were never afraid as they were very friendly, but others might be intimidated. The cleanliness was also a bit of an issue. There was a noticeable odor in the living room carpet, especially when sitting on the floor and the downstairs bath had a disposable razor and used bar of soap left in it. Otherwise, it was clean. All in all, we enjoyed the cabin. We realize the neighbor dogs are out of the owner’s control but wanted to make others aware in case they aren’t dog people.

Peace and Serenity

When you first drive up and cross the bridge you know your in the country. When you feel the gentle cool Breeze you know your in the mountians. When you hear the sound of waterfall and gentle waters you want that hammock you didn't bring. The house itself is rustic ,open beam and decor that remind you of days gone past. NO CELL PHONE OR INTERNET CONNECTIONS HERE , THANKFULLY , BUT A HARD LINE IS AVAILABLE. Yet the house has many convienances. The kitchen is huge with stools and a nice size table that opens unto the deck with chairs and outdoor grill. Great place to read a book , scipture or have a pleasant conversation with the sound of many waters. Their is a Fire pit for the evening that beckons for a good late evening cup of coffee or coco. The rooms are spacious and bedding that is comfortable.Up and Downstairs bathroms for those long Hollywood showers you've desired. Theirs even a washer and dryer for those outfits you want to wear more then once. Also their are two ponds and yes their are fish in them for we caught them and threw them back... First thing you do weather permitting open all the widows and take in the Fresh air. Just remember your in the montians, here you will see Turkeys , Huge deer even a 10pt and BEARS. YAP, walking down the road 100 yards from the cabin. If you are looking for alot to do,your looking in the wong place. But if Peace and Quite to reconnect with the outdoors or to re connect as a Family you won you won't be disappointed.See Ya Next Year !
