South Side is a vast district along the southern side of the Monongahela River and rising to the peaks of South Side Slopes. Its lower portion has some of the city’s best bars and restaurants, while open-air staircases lead to platforms with remarkable views. Visit South Side to follow in the footsteps of the miners from bygone times, as you climb from riverside parks to the tops of the slopes.
Marking the district’s western edge is Emerald View Park, whose steep slopes bring you to some of the city’s best viewing platforms. Take in the vista of skyscrapers rising from the city center.
Head east along South Side Flats next to the river. Here, enjoy warm summers with trips to Southside Riverfront Park and South Side Dog Park where a boat ramp allows you to launch canoes.
Go south for a few blocks to reach the main boulevard, which is lined by restaurants, bars and clubs. Watch your favorite bands grace the stage of the Rex Theater, a former vaudeville site that was built at the beginning of the 20th century. For a modern theater setting, head to the cozy City Theatre Company.
Like a large green wall, South Side Slopes rises from the southern end of South Side Flats. Climb up the open-air staircases that lead to the top and bring your kids to the Bandi Schaum Community Garden. Study the historic architecture of religious buildings and admire the views of the city from Quarry Field.
The South Side area runs east from the Liberty Bridge to the Hot Metal Bridge. From the southern bank of the Monongahela River, it stretches uphill toward Arlington. Get a bus to one of the many stops dotted around this area or walk east from Station Square Station.
Travel through the rest of the city, stopping at the nearby areas of Allentown, Arlington Heights and Mt. Washington.
