Riu Palace

Posted Jan 24, 2015
All in all the resort was very nice. The beach was amazing. We loved the trees over other resorts having umbrellas. The trees gave just enough natural shade. The beach was great and we swam almost every day. The buffets were great as well. My family loved having ice cream available all the time. The mail disappointment was the double beds. They are so small that it really is hard to sleep two people on a double bed. We had to ask for a roll away bed and then share the two double beds with three of us.

Great place - Would go back of sure!

Posted Jan 22, 2015
Pros: Everything
Cons: Odd smell - maybe musty - probably from the humidity most of the year. Stronger in some parts than others - on big deal for me though.
Location: Playa Del Carmen 20 min walk - Xel Ha / Xplore / Cozumel all within an hour. Very safe.
Everything good to say. From the food to the staff, location to the beach and pool. Everything done very well. Everything was constantly being cleaning or attended to. Found the buffets my favorite. They had everything you could want and done very well.

Beautiful hotel

Pros: Pros: beautiful hotel, lots of fountains, great landscaping, big pool, staff are very nice and helpful, ocean was beautiful
Cons: Cons: rooms smelled a little musty, Have maps available of the are, at check in explain more how everything works-such as scheduling meals etc,
Location: Loved Xcaret, make sure you go to the shows during the day time and do the river early in the day, there is shopping in Playa del Carmen
Great hotel, beautiful view, great service! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool was big with built in chairs but it was a little cold. There were lots of activities to do if you wanted to. There was a wide variety of food.

Wonderful resort and amazing staff! Enrique the waiter on the beach and Jorge at the lobby bar made our trip so fun and always made sure we were taken care of. Food and drinks were all exceptional! Beds were a little hard and the shower wasn't the best quality but overall this resort was top of the line!

Best hotel on the beach...

Posted Jan 12, 2015
Pros: It was beautiful, very clean and comfortable.
Cons: You all did such a great job that I can not I of one thing to improve on.
Location: Going downtown, the beach, also rented a van and went to XelHa. Used the boogie boards and Para sailed, which was accessed from the beach.
Our whole trip was awesome, from the flight, transportation, food, staff, entertainment and hotel. We would return and do it all over again.

Very relaxing

Posted Jan 4, 2015
Pros: Was great for kids, easy, comfortable
Cons: Would be nice to have a warm jacuzzi, building could use some updating
Location: It is walkable to the center of Playa del Carmen, right on the beach, in a safe-feeling enclave
Overall, this hotel exceeded expectations. The food was good, especially for an all inclusive, and staff was great. It was immediately relaxing. We were there during the busiest week of the year (after Christmas until after New Years) and rarely did it feel overcrowded. I would stay there again.

It depends what you want from your vacation. It is very quiet. Not much happening during the day and at night after the show is over. There is not much entertainment. The children have not much to do. The resort's activities are devided . Parents had to look everywhere for their kids. Few activities in sport bar in the lobby. One Ping pong table at the beach . No kids club. No night clubs for teenagers. If you have teenagers or young adults look for somewhere else. They accommodate a family of four in a junior suite but there are really one oversized headboard with two full size bed next to each other. Usually in most hotels they have 2 double bed separated. Every time we wanted to make reservation at French restaurant it was full. We were there on Christmas Day which the hotel was basically empty. I would have understand if the hotel was full. I have to mention that the hotel was clean, the food was good, and the staff was great.

Decent hotel, ok food ,

The hotel was ok. The pool is not great for little kids. Only a very tiny lounge area meant for adults with shallow water. They do have activities for kids at night which was fun for them.

Nice resort but with a few issues...

Posted Dec 29, 2014
Pros: staff beach
Cons: dinner reservation policy towel card policy room reservation policy
Location: About a 15 minute walk to Playa del Carmen by beach, 20 minutes by street, or $15 by cab Playa del Carmen has great food, souvenirs, & entertainment
Just spent 4 nights (over Christmas) at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya in Playacar. First off, the resort was absolutely beautiful on Christmas Eve, and the buffet dinner was an unbelievable spread of food. They truly made it a special night to celebrate Christmas. And overall, the resort is pretty & clean, the beach is beautiful, the food is fine, and the location is good, but they need to change a few of their policies before we'd go back. They require dinner reservations which you have to stand in line for an hour during the middle of the day to get (and we could only get 1 out of the 4 nights we were there), they require "towel cards" so you can only get 1 towel per person, and they don't honor room reservations even when booked 5 months in advance (we booked a room with 2 double beds but none were available upon check-in). We go to this area of Mexico every year, always to different resorts, and the other resorts don't make it such a hassle to eat dinner, get towels, or get the room you reserved. There are just better resorts out there for the price, without the hassles. That being said though, the staff at the Riu Palace RM are WONDERFUL, and they are what makes this place great. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and personable. Our 4 teenage boys really enjoyed getting to know some of them---Que Que and Gorge were especially awesome! The great staff outweighed the issues we had, and we enjoyed a wonderful family vacation there.
