Appalachian Farmhouse- A Real 200 Year Old Farm House With Modern Amenities

Historic vacation home in Waynesville
Contact by phone call or text if you need something. Coronavirus Update: First, we take the virus seriously and have from day one, and we have had no reported cases in our area. We have taken steps to reduce any contamination. We thoroughly clean everything after every stay including window seals and door handles. We are in isolation. We have anti bacterial or Clorox wipes for use on yourself and in our rentals. We have antibacterial spray as well in all the units. All dishes, glasses, and silverware are washed in a high heat dishwasher and washed between renters. All linens are high heat washed and dried and stored in a safe place away from any other materials. If you woud like, we can even leave the cleaned linens for you, so you can make your own bed. If you are feeling ill, please do nnt come to our place. You will refunded right now. Let's all work together to get through these trying times. Luckily, we are l;ocated in a rural setting and could not be in a better location for such hazards. Extremely safe and isolated from other people. Please read entire listing before requesting a booking and watch our video: If you request an early checkin and we have not approved it then please dont assume you can come early, we have a lot of back to back bookings and need time to clean. If you want a one of a kind experience that is not duplicatable, then read on. The Boyd family migrated from Scotland to Ireland in 1745 after losing their royal lands fighting on the wrong side in the Jacobite uprising. By the late 1700's, the Boyd family had migrated to America just in time to fight for the colony's independence. In the early 1820's they settled Haywood County on the 100 acre plus farm land where the family still resides today- 200 years later. This is a real working farm surrounded by farmland in a rural setting close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That means there is an abudance of animals including horses and cows. There is an abundance of wildlife including possums, raccons, and squirrels. There are all types of critters and varmits on the farm. That is part of what makes it unique. There is a red fox and a bobcat that live close by as well as a flock of turkeys. You may see deer, bear, and elk that come over from Cataloochee Valley and sometimes bed down in the front yard. You will probably hear the coyotes howl at night. There are a couple of harmless black snakes that live close by and help us control the mice population. None of these animals will harm you, we have been living with them for centuries. If you don't like animals or are afraid of animlas our place is not for you. This is not a country club and this is not a resort. There are also electric fences on the property and if you touch them, you will get a jolt but they will not hurt you. The house belonged to Lt. Colonel Katie Boyd (deceased) who traveled the world during her army military career collecting antiques and other pieces of one of a kind furniture. The logs in the interior of the house are more than 200 years old. She had the logs moved to the home site in the 1980's and built the first part of the house. It was updated in the early 1990's and then again in 2017. If you want to experience the appalachian history, culture in a farm setting with modern conveniences then this is it. This is the place for families and close friends to come enjoy their time together surrounded by our family and on our farm. This is not a party house, and remember, it is an old farm house so it does have some quirks, but totally original. We take pride in keeping our place clean and fully stocked. We have the exterminator out every month, but this is a farmhouse , so you may see the occassional ladybug, beatle, spider or moth when guests leave the doors open. Please keep them closed. In the summer, lightning bugs light up the night sky and kids have a blast chasing and catching them. Our place is about an authentic experience that can not be duplicated. This is a place where families can create memories that last a lifetime. We are looking for people who want a slower pace to life but close to all the amenities with year round access. The property is minutes from Maggie Valley, Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains Park, Cataloochee Ski Slope and Waynesville. Asheville is a 30 minute drive and all interstate. This updated farm house has all modern conveniences including wi-fi, televisions in every room, Direct TV package with 130 stations, a sound system that looks old but plays everything from USB digital, to cassette tapes. We are in a rural, mountain setting so sometimes wifi can be spotty, but most of the time works great. Relax on the 120 foot wrap around porch or play many of the games we have provided for family entertainment and in the evening sit by the fire at the newly built fire pit. (Fire wood can be purchased from John Caldwell at Caldwell Excavating on U.S. route 276, and he will deliver. Also can purchase at convenience stores located on 276.) We do recommend getting some fire starter logs at Lowe's or Home Depot before coming). This is modern convenience meets family tradition and history just not available in any other setting. We welcome you to a be a part of our family and share in our 200 year old legacy. Feel free to hike or walk the fields and gravel roads around the house and when you pass one of us, throw up a hand and say hello. House has a Queen, a full, a double and two single beds. So can sleep 8 easily and 10 with the pull out couch. Feel free to set up a tent in the big beautiful yard for the kids- totally secluded and safe environment. There are two convenience stores within a half mile. A Dollar General store is less than 10 minutes on 276 south. An Ingles grocery store is located in Waynesville 15 minutes away. We have two refrigerators for plenty of food storage. Heating and air conditioning can be set remotely if you need help There are stairs with two bedrooms upstairs and master on main. Your deposit is returned after 7 days from checkout. We offer a 10% discount to anyone who has a military I.D. You must scan and email it, so we can give you a custom quote. Wonderful, peaceful visit
The process was very easy and this cabin is gorgeous!!! Owner was wonderful to work with. We enjoyed our stay tremendously and plan on coming back again.

Perfect mountain getaway
This is our second year staying here. We went with another family this year and had kids ranging in ages from 8-15. We all enjoyed playing cornhole, the younger kids loved the swing in the yard, and we all enjoyed eating on the porch and sitting around the fire pit at night. The surroundings are incredibly peaceful, and we were fortunate enough to get to watch a beautiful full moon rise over the hillside directly across from the property two nights in a row. The location is convenient to a lot of fun places to visit. We went to Sliding Rock, saw some waterfalls, did some hiking, and went to see the elk in Cataloochee Valley. The owner is amazing...flexible, accommodating, and always quick to respond. One of our favorite places we’ve ever stayed.

Perfect for our time away!
It was fun to stay in a real farmhouse yet with updated amenities especially to the kitchen and bathrooms. I LOVED the jetted tub after a long day of fun. The covered car port was nice for the 1 day it rained. The openness of the living room gave lots of light. Waking up to birds chirping and a view of the cows on the mountain was so relaxing. I 100% recommend staying at this farmhouse!

Just what we were looking for
We came to Waynesville to take our boys skiing at Cataloochee. This scenic cabin is about 20 min from the ski area. The farmland surrounding it is so beautiful it looks like a picture. The cabin is beautifully done. It is rustic .....but by that I do not mean dingy. You can still see where the original farm house probably was before the cabin was added on to. The renovation has kept the charm and character of the original building while making comfortable room for up to 8 guests (I'd adults dont mind sleeping 2 in a full size bed). The cabin is incredibly well stocked too......plenty of towels, blankets, coffee creamer, tea super well equipt kitchen. They have an amazing collection of records and a record player. Lots of old country (Merle Haggard, Marty Robin's, Johnny Cash, John Denver.....) and classics (Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatre A all the way to Michael Jackson). We would come back just to listen to them again. We enjoyed board games too. We are at the Buttered Biscuit for breakfast which was amazing and Birchwood Hall for dinner which is a farm to table dining treat! Highly recommend both. We stayed for 3 nights and hated leaving. We will most definitely try to secure this property again the next time we come up to ski and would love to utilize it in the warmer months to get to enjoy the outdoor features too!
