Hike up lava-spewing volcanoes, discover ancient Mayan ruins amid the jungle and unwind in the soothing hot springs of this diverse Central American nation.

Visit Guatemala to discover the heart of Mayan culture in Central America, where ancient ruins blend with beautiful natural landscapes. From the sprawl of the urban cities to remote mountain ranges, Guatemala is a destination that offers options for all interests.

Though Guatemala is en route to modernization, the traditions and customs of the ancient Maya continue to live on. Practice your Spanish in this developing nation to make friends with the locals and attend a Catholic Mass to see how this religion has shaped Guatemala’s culture.

Guatemala’s capital, Guatemala City, is the largest city in Central America and the hub of Guatemalan politics and wealth. Bustling crowds fill the pedestrianized streets and filter in and out of the cafés.

Southwest of Guatemala City is the colonial city of Antigua, an attractive town featuring cobbled streets and pastel-colored churches. Take a tour of the Iglesia y Convento de Santo Domingo, the remains of a large monastery including two underground crypts and the ruins of the church.

From Antigua, head out to the countryside to find towering volcanoes, dense forests and coffee farms. Climb the volcanoes of Agua and Acatenango, and marvel at the active Volcán de Pacaya which looms over the city. Also in this region is Mixco Viejo, a Mayan ruin set amid lush greenery.

Those in search of Guatemalan history and thrilling adventure should spend time in the western highlands. This is one of the true hearts of Mayan culture in Central America, as the Mayan people have thrived here for over 2,000 years. See the hot springs of Fuentes Georginas, go hiking around the Mayan village of Todos Santos Cuchumatan and shop for handicrafts in Chichicastenango market.

Most visitors fly into Guatemala City’s airport, Aeropuerto Internacional La Aurora. From Guatemala City, take a shuttle bus to Antigua. Pullman buses are the most comfortable choice for traveling between major cities. For short hops, take a tuk-tuk through the towns.

After you’ve spent some time inland, consider a trip to Guatemala’s Pacific Coast where you can find a few oceanfront resorts with views of sweeping sands.
