DeVeras is a beautifully designed, architecturally unique, eco-friendly house, built on the side of a mountain, just above Portal, AZ. The exteriors are a combination of rustic industrial steel and wood, the colors of which blend beautifully with those of the mountains and cliff backdrop. Facing southward toward the entry into Cave Creek Canyon, the sunsets are endlessly poetic. During the day, the front porch view is filled with expansive skies and mountains, and at night a vast sea of stars blanket the heavens. DeVeras is a 12-acre property with a main house, a separate garage and artist’s loft, and an infinity edge lap pool overlooking a the tree-lined creek bed, Portal, and the valley below.
On approach to DeVeras, you are welcomed by an expansive front porch with 20-foot columns.
This leads into the main living area of the house. The house is an open concept 1200 square ft. structure enhanced with floor to ceiling windows that create an uninterrupted connection with the mountains. To the right as you enter is the kitchen and dining area and to the left, a living area and wood-burning stove. The main floor also includes a full bath, utility area (washer/dryer, and pantry), and a bed nook with a twin bed, perfectly situated to enjoy the scenic marvel of the mountainside.
A flight of stairs on the far left will take you to an open-faced loft which overlooks the main living area below. The first open area is outfitted with a desk and a futon couch, and is primarily utilized as a study, yet easily shifted into a bedroom as needed (with either the futon, or a deluxe, high profile queen sized air mattress). To the center is a full bath with a walk-in shower. The far end of the loft area is a bedroom with a queen size bed. The entire loft space, overlooking the lower level shares the floor to ceiling view of the mountains. The north-facing wall overlooks the landscaped pool area, the artist studio, and the valley floor beyond Portal. A sight to behold at night!
The interior walls are predominantly bamboo, the bottom floors are polished concrete, and the upper level floors are bamboo. The house is warmed by radiant heat via water coils in concrete flooring and a wood-burning stove. The household water is well water on the property and is heated by an "on-demand" system. An abundance of windows on all sides of the house open to allow a wonderful and refreshing mountain, cross-breeze. This as well as large, modern ceiling fans keep the house comfortably cool in the summer months.
Above the garage via a private, outside stair entry, is a 200 square ft. private studio with half bath and a queen bed. Highlighting this room is a beautiful floor-to-ceiling picture window. It is perfect for stargazing, or to invite inspiration from which to paint or write. The garage below houses the pool pump and is not accessible to guests. Facing northward, nestled directly behind the main house, and on the side of the studio area, you'll find the landscaped, infinity pool area with an outside shower and sitting area.
As for the amenities provided at DeVeras, there are plenty "creature comforts" to satisfy, yet you can still "get off the grid" if you'd like! Cell-phone coverage spots can be found, dependent on where you stand but not too difficult to figure out, by Verizon subscribers (there are currently no other towers nearby). Subsequently, there is a landline in the upstairs study for local calls and in case of distance calls can be made with a fee assessed per call. WiFi Internet access is provided at no extra charge and affords those who prefer, an opportunity to utilize their own electronic devices and access their own entertainment choices. There is a telescope available for those interested in stargazing into the night skies. The kitchen is well equipped with a Ninja blender, a crock-pot, microwave, electric stove, refrigerator/freezer, a K-cup coffee maker, and various cookware, utensils and serving dishes. There is also a full-sized washer and dryer available as needed. Renting DeVeras is not for everyone. Being mindful of the fact that DeVeras is tucked into the side of a mountain means Mother nature must be respected at all times. It is important to note for example that access to DeVeras is privately maintained and requires a vehicle with a higher wheelbase (e.g. SUV, Jeep, Truck, etc.) to navigate some spots with a steeper incline, sometimes rocky, and at one point crosses a creek. We strongly urge using a 4-wheel drive vehicle. You will need to be aware of water levels, as well as the swiftness of currents during the rainy season, and take responsibility for all necessary precautions to remain safe; this may involve making a decision to not cross the creek at all. Mother nature, plants, and animals are beautiful, majestic, and wild, and if you choose to come to visit our little haven, please be aware of above mentioned and other inherent risks that come with venturing out into the wilds. All warnings and risks considered, friends and family who've spent time at DeVeras, without exception, come away feeling a little more centered and relaxed.
