Location awesome; accommodations lousy

Let me start off by saying that the location of the hotel is awesome. It is 100 yards to a clean, beautiful beach and that makes up for a lot of what the hotel is lacking, but not enough. Yes, the rooms and hotel are older and run-down, the furniture is falling apart and I have no idea about what was happening to the ceiling in the bathroom, but the real problem to me was the smell. It was some weird, unpleasant combo of musty carpet, cleaning chemicals and maple syrup. I just couldn't get used to it. I ended up going to Safeway and buying several air fresheners but they didn't help. Normally, I try not to spend too much time in my hotel room, anyway, but I have little kids who need downtime from the beach so I was forced to endure the smell for several hours a day. I was never so happy to check out of a hotel than I was after two nights in that room.
Oh, and housekeeping completely skipped our room so I had to depend on the wonderful, kind woman who works evenings at the front desk to supply me with fresh towels and extra blankets.
If the Sea Esta I made a few renovations (and ripped up that stinky carpet), I would gladly pay double to stay there because the location is so great, but as it stands, I would not return.
