Romantic Steiner Log Cabin at Mt Hood, Oregon's Playground for Skiing & Hiking

Waterfront cabin with kitchen and patio
Dancing Bear Log Cabin is a beautifully preserved example of the Steiner Log Cabins that are unique to the Mt Hood Area in Oregon, and a highly valued piece of its history. Steiner is well known for having also worked on the construction of Timberline Lodge. This vintage, three bedroom, one bath cabin is located on historic Barlow Trail nestled next to Hackett Creek. Let the creek lull you to sleep as it babbles under your window-- backing to a canopy of old growth fir trees and wispy alders. Cross the creek on a wooden bridge to your own private picnic area where you can toast marshmellows by the outdoor fire-pit or play a friendly game of horseshoes at the horseshoe pit. The back deck overlooks Hackett Creek and the woods and there is a private creekside hot tub. The authenticity of this home has been carefully maintained, and the furnishings artfully capture the period in keeping with the spirit of the 1930's era. Sleeps 6 in beds, 2 on futon in the living room. The master bedroom has a queen log bed with luxurious Pendleton Woolen Mills bedding, rustic light fixtures and furnishings. The guest bedroom offers a double bed. On the main level you'll find a third bedroom with a twin day bed/trundle(under twin) and a second TV/VCR. There's also a futon sofa in the living room provide extra sleeping space. The massive stone fireplace provides warmth and a feel for what our beautiful Mt. Hood area must have been like back in the day.
Remember: this is a historic home from the 1930’s and it is built differently than modern homes—including creaking floors and no insulation in the walls. The staircase is original split log and takes careful steps. That's part of the charm of a hand hewn home.
Romance, charm and a warm fire await you at this lovely home. This is a great place to experience Mt Hood from a historical perspective. Sleeps up to 6 adults in beds, with living room futon for additional sleeping space.

Quiet, quaint, unique historic cabin
The cabin and grounds are beautiful and tranquil. Mount Hood National Forest with its hikes and vistas are close. We very much enjoyed our stay.

Adorable, cozy, & warm
Great location! Feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere but actually minutes from great coffee, pizza, & grocery. The Alforno wood oven pizza place was just incredible! The cabin was very cozy, clean, and welcoming with that rustic cabin feel. The extra fridge & washer/dryer were huge perks for longer stays. Lots of cute woodsy elements like the wooden door handles and sliding wooden windows. Full kitchen even though we didn’t cook much. Our favorite part was the kitchen table view, full windows overlooking a babbling brook.

Wonderful cabin
We had a lovely time at the historic cabin and loved all the little details.

4/5 Good

Cozy Cabin
Dancing Bear Cabin is quaint and cozy. The furnishings are high-quality and complement the cabin feel very well. The bed was very comfortable as well. Our favorite part was the kitchen nook where we watched birds at the feeder and the large table accommodates big board games. The internet has amazingly fast speed. Being an older cabin, electrical outlets aren't always easy to find, but we managed. We were given only two washcloths to use for a six-night stay, so had to do laundry just for the sake of having clean washcloths. We didn't use the hot tub because the water had a green color with a bad smell. A man came out to try to correct the chemicals but it didn't get up to par in time. He found lots of hair in the filter. Probably needs to be emptied and re-filled. It looked as if the deck hadn't been swept in awhile and we swept it and the outdoor chairs. I have a friend who does cleaning for a VRBO property and just before a guest is to arrive, she always cleans up the deck and makes sure the hot tub is ready to go, so we would have hoped that would be the case. The outdoor picnic table was covered, but that could be because we're just coming out of winter and maybe during summer it is not covered. It just made us not feel like we wanted to use it and mess with the cover. Overall I feel the price was on the high side, but it really is a charming place and we enjoyed ourselves.

The perfect getaway!
Great place, cozy and sweet, plenty of room, hot tub under the stars, chilling on the back deck. Loved it!
