Snap a memorable photograph from the edge of North America at this monumental landmark.

Visit the Southernmost Point of the United States for a unique photo opportunity and views toward Cuba. Pose in front of the huge structure emblazoned with the words, “Southernmost Point Continental U.S.A.” and “90 miles to Cuba,” for a memorable photograph.

Since 1983, a huge concrete buoy has indicated the landmark. Prior to its installation, a sign was used to signify its location, but after countless thefts it was decided that something more substantial was needed.

Arrive early at Southernmost Point to ensure you don’t have to peer over a crowd of shoulders to see the buoy. By mid-morning many of Key West’s visitors can be found waiting patiently to get a photograph.

Start with breakfast and enjoy a coffee with a meal at a café just a block away from Southernmost Point.

Southernmost Point is located close to many of Key West’s major attractions, including the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and the Key West Lighthouse. A gentle stroll around the coast reveals beaches, tropical vegetation and picnic areas with great views.

Just a block away from the buoy you’ll find South Beach, one of Key West’s renowned swimming spots. Find stalls renting out sporting equipment, lounge chairs and sun umbrellas at the top of the beach. The strip of sand is not large, and it gets busy, but the water is calm and inviting. It’s a good place for snorkeling to discover the colorful species of fish that inhabit the warmer waters of the southern edge of the United States.

Southernmost Point is located at the junction of South and Whitehead Streets on Key West's Atlantic Ocean shore. Reach the marker on foot or bicycle from within the town, or park your car in the metered parking spots above South Beach. Southernmost Point can be visited daily and there is no fee.

Long lines to take a photo

Since this is a widely popular icon for Key West and there are multiple cruise ships going in and out of port everyday here there was an unexpected long line to wait your turn to get a picture taken. I opted to not wait and took the photo between people going up but plan accordingly if you want to wait. I'd guess a 15-20 minute wait.
