"This used to be a motor lodge in the style of Howard Johnson's - its original name was "Garrett's Desert Inn." It was eventually converted into a full-service hotel with a full lobby, conference center, modern rooms, etc. But it retains the look of an old-time motel, with rooms that open out onto an outdoor balcony instead of into an interior hallway. We had a serious issue with our room: our room faced DUE WEST so the hotel door bakes in the late afternoon desert sun. Eventually the door locking mechanism gets so hot that it FAILS TO OPERATE and you are effectively locked out of your room until the sun goes down. The assistant manager on duty actually suggested holding a bag of ice up to the lock for 5-10 minutes to cool it down. The staff is fully aware that this is an issue, but they continue to rent out the western-facing rooms. We were locked out of our room on three different occasions, until the staff was finally able to move us to a room that faces NORTH and whose door lock is basically always in the shade. That door operated fine, and we had no other issues during our stay. Choice Hotels Group, who owns the hotel, was completely unprofessional and unconcerned with our issue, offering only some trivial number of rewards points for our hassle. I would recommend that you choose a different hotel in Santa Fe, or at least make sure that you're NOT in a western-facing room, because the hotel management clearly has no solution for this ongoing issue."
