    About this property

Rent a Moment In History at Fern Cove Nature Preserve's Belle Baldwin House

Beachfront vacation home with kitchen and patio
Rent a moment In history at Vashon Park District's Belle Baldwin House at Fern Cove, home of Washington State's first female physician. Named a State Historic Landmark, the Belle Baldwin house may be the only known intact example of the residential work of Harlan Thomas, a renowned architect whose buildings are distinguished Seattle landmarks. Vashon Park District’s ‘green’ restoration process has returned the house to its 1912 glory, creating a relaxing, natural environment that honors the park and the past. Located on 750 feet of pristine Puget Sound beach, it doesn't get any better than this. The house is located in Vashon Park District’s Fern Cove Park. The park is open to the public during the day for walk-in, passive uses, such as beach walks and bird watching. The home was fully refurbished in 2008 to provide weekly rentals to the public. It features a large living - dining room with the original paned windows facing the shore and Baldwin creek. The three bedrooms (two queens/two twin), one bath house is comfortable for a group of six (there is also a roll-a-way available) and we provide all household items to assure a comfortable stay. There is a gas fireplace and nap friendly leather couch.
Guest accommodations at this vacation home offer fireplaces and DVD players. Rooms open to patios. Kitchens offer refrigerators, stovetops, microwaves, and separate dining areas.
Bathrooms include showers and hair dryers. Additionally, rooms include coffee/tea makers and irons/ironing boards.
The recreational activities listed below are available either on site or nearby; fees may apply.

      tranquility and reflection 2018-2019

This historical home has so much character. Peaceful surroundings on the entire property, including an amazing cove to explore. Spending the last week of 2018 and bringing in the New Year the first couple of days of 2019 in this home was just what "the Doctor" ordered. (Belle in spirit). Spending most of my time staring at the tide out the wood pane wavy glass windows while working on a 1500 piece puzzle was the best way to relax. Sunsets were spectacular and standing far out during the low tide with the seagulls singing in the evening as the sun goes down is such a treat. Deer roaming thru the yard in the mornings. The "old house" smell sets you back in time and you are drawn into the lifestyle of the early 1900's. The furniture, the old wood floors, the hats and the old books on the book shelves....... You never want to leave

Nice but not easy to get into

The house is situated in the middle of a state park and the view of the sound is great. It’s very quite. It’s an old home so the musty smell was expected but if you are sensitive to smells it might not be your happy place. It was well stocked but the quality of the towels was not great. They are like hand me downs. I like a nice plush white towel so you don’t have to wonder if it’s really clean. The fact that there is only one bathroom is a bummer. If you have more than 3 people, it could be a problem when everyone is trying to ready at once. The biggest drawback is related to the gate. You have to unlock an entry gate to get it and lock it behind you. Not a big deal except the chain is pretty heavy and rusty/dirty so expect to get a little dirty EVERYTIME you leave and come back. It’s VERY dark so leave lights on in the house when you leave in the evening or else you might not find it. You can not park close to the house so If you have a lot of stuff to carry into the house, they offer a wheelbarrow. The heater works great, all the appliances and plumbing are in order.

          Fern Cove

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this little gem hidden in the woods! We spent many hours sitting around, reading the history, passing the guest book around in front of the fireplace. Every morning around 7:00 was spent walking the shoreline of Fern Cove discovering sea life we had never seen before. We had 2 houses, but everyone gathered here for meals. Late in the afternoon we watched the sunset and the geese fly in to bathe in the spring water from the creek running through the property. It was magical! We extended our stay, was very hard to leave. I definitely left my heart back at The Baldwin House!

            Beautiful, comfortable

The house is charming, beautifully restored and furnished, with spacious rooms and high ceilings. We were on the island to see family, so we didn’t get to spend as much time here as we’d have liked - but what time we had here was lovely.

            5/5 Excellent

Wonderful quiet, spot and house is thoughtfully outfitted, clean and cozy.
